Was Colin Kapernick cancelled ?

No. He was using his employer's time, while in his employer's uniform in his employer's place of business to make political statements which pissed off a large number of his employer's customers and had them quitting and cancelling their season tickets and refusing to buy merchandise or watch the games any more.

No one has the right to be political on his employer's time.

I might add that anyone who brings disrepute on his or her employer is routinely fired nowadays except for teachers - for some reason. But that's mainly applied to people on the right who make statements the people on the left don't like.

I can anecdote too:

Texas high school principal put on administrative leave after being accused of promoting critical race theory

He Taught About White Privilege and Got Fired.

School board reprimands teacher for anti-racism book

You're going to see a lot more of this ****.

What you're describing sounds like what happened to Don Cherry call cancel culture for what it is.

A teacher in Toronto got sent home for wearing black face at halloween, so you're  /Off/ on that too.

You are making excuses. Cherry was paid specifically to be outrageous and cantankerous in public. A university professor is not. Nor is an airline pilot. Nor is a football player.

Anyone dumb enough to wear blackface in this day and age deserves to be fired, but I was actually referring to university teachers who have that tenure thing which allows them to say almost anything they want.

But he pissed off many of 'his customers' ?

That also prevents Jordan Peterson from being fired, as well as people who are cancelled.

Cherry was paid to be a hockey commentator. "No one has the right to be political on his employer's time."

Did he really? Or did he **** off the media, who howled in protest, roped in politicians to fulminate, and got the prissy CBC execs wringing their hands? I've sren no indication hockey fans wanted him fired, and every web poll I've seen had like 70% opposed.

No it doesn't. The only thing they could have stuck on Peterson was refusing to use preferred pronouns, yet he never did refuse to use pronouns to a student and said as much. If you're a Canadian university professor and make controversial remarks from the conservative side of the spectrum you'll be fired.

Then they maybe should have told him to stop during one of the ten million times when he mentioned other stuff, eh?

There is no academic freedom anymore. Universities don't hire conservatives, and if one creeps in by mistake good luck getting tenure. And if they open their mouth too much they'll be forced out. That, of course, is your idea of 'academic freedom'. They're free to express their views on anything as long as they stick to the party line.

1. No.  Rogers execs.
2. They have polling for this stuff.  Take into account his costs and they were likely thinking 'meh, let's just use this to axe him... nobody will switch the channel'
3. Tenure.  Peterson wasn't fired.  I'll look at your examples.

That prof from Nova Scotia in the link was tenured and was fired.

Would be interested to see what comments he made.

Do better, people.

I mean - can't you at least Google these things for other perspectives ?

Aaand...

A University of Alberta associate professor says she was dismissed from an administrative role over her views that transgender identity doesn’t trump biological sex for policy decisions.

This implies that she is still with U of A.

Look.   When these things came up around the time of Peterson, Shepherd et al. we discussed these cases.  I remember finding THE criteria for academic freedom, as explained by the body that adjudicates these things.

Since we are already a little bit in the weeds with details, is it too much for me to ask you folks to Google up those details before we continue ?  I just spent 10 minutes on this ... busy day

Or maybe they were willing t tolerate the digressions as part of the brand until he went all racist. Or perhaps they realized his time was done and this gave them a perfect excuse to get rid of a senile old fart.

This is such whiny bullshit. Surveys of academia since the 1950s have consistently shown liberals outnumbering conservatives in higher ed. The obvious explanation is self-selection:conservatives go into business or the vast and lucrative right wing think tank industry, they don't get PhDs and try to make five figures toiling in the academy.

Lots of professors post video/audio recordings of their classes. With the university's permission. If privacy is a concern maybe you shouldn't stand up in a big classroom and talk about your issues with strangers.

You are a really arrogant SOB, you know that? You look for reasons to confirm your own left-wing bias about these issues and then act like everyone else ought to be using that information to change their views completely. That's crap. He posted criticisms of colleagues? Give us a **** break. Tons of professors post criticism of any colleague who dares to issue a politicaly incorrect opinion. And they aren't slow to sign petitions for their removal either.
