I can’t say that I would trust any sort of infrastructure in a place like China to keep me safe.  Maybe the Great Wall wouldn’t fall over...   so I would go there.

Another nightmare scenario....

https://bc.ctvnews.ca/video-shows-kayak-rescue-taking-dramatic-turn-in-kelowna-1.5431130

Quote
...the rescuer, was recording her trip when she came across a man in the water.

He'd been there for at least 45 minutes.

She told him to hold on to her kayak as she headed to shore, calling out, "Good job. Remember to breathe."

But the pair ran into trouble when the man tried to lie across her kayak. The boat turned over, and she was dumped into the water as well.

She managed to flag down another boat after the incident, and the pair was brought to shore.

What would you have done?

In that situation, I would never have let him grab my kayak.  I always have line with me, carabiners and such that I would have used to tow him to shore.  He had a PFD on, which is good.  Grab my kayak and you’ll be bonked on the noggin by a paddle until you let go.  Can’t be a help if we’re both struggling to survive...

Plus, the rescuer needs a better camera...  or learn to use better settings.  Bloody people and their shitty quality footage.  No excuse in this day and age to make me sit through anything worse than 1080p!

That was my thought too.  I always have a throw-bag with rope in it when I am out. I'd have thrown him that rather than let him grab my kayak.  I also have a loud whistle in my kayak that would hopefully get the attention of somebody with a boat.  There aren't a lot of boats on the lake so far this year, so they were pretty lucky to get help as quickly as they did.

Good for the lady in the kayak to rescue the guy!  And luckily there were other boats nearby.  But she really put herself in too much danger.  She’s still a hero!

A major industrial accident here in Kim City today as a giant crane collapsed.  The crane was attached to an under-construction residential tower. It was in the process of being dismantled, and the boom section of the crane fell to the ground. The accident happened around 11am at a busy downtown location, and it was fortunate that it fell in a location where more people weren't underneath. Had the crane been facing a different direction, there might have been dozens of people underneath the boom. As it stands, there are known to be "multiple" fatalities and at least 10 in the hospital with injuries. nearby residents have been evacuated until the remains of the crane can be stabilized.

Some photos of the wreckage here, courtesy of the Kim City Picayune:

The tower, when complete, will join the growing number of residential towers here in Kim City.  As with some of the other under-construction residential towers here in the downtown area, the "Brooklyn" will be over four stories tall and feature indoor plumbing and toilets, as well as electricity, typifying the sort of new "big city" style residences that sophisticated Kim City customers are now seeking.

We made the national news?  I didn't think we made national news for anything except covidiots and drug busts.  My home is about a 10 minute walk from the site of the accident, and I was at work at the time, which is even farther, so I am not directly affected. However our strata manager works in a building a stones throw from there, and she is evacuated right now.

Also, I have to plug the Castanet website.  For a tiny local business with just a handful of employees, they do an amazing job of covering news here in town.  Everybody I know here checks their site multiple times per day.

We seem to be having problems building residential towers lately.

As a hater of heights and being on tall storied floors, this is my nightmare.

My dad was a fire fighter and said not to live past a certain # of floors because firefighter ladders don't go higher than that.  I can't remember the # of floors he said.  Something around 10.

Also another firefighter told me that the safest place in a burning building is the emergency stairwells, they're rated for fire and they have these pressure systems that suck all the smoke out the top of the stairwell, he said you could safety stay in there for hours during a fire.  I didn't believe him.
