Coffee Culture

How do you take your coffee?  Make your own or coffee shop?   Drip coffee?  French press?  Espresso machine?

Since COVID, I mostly make my own.  Occasionally, I will go to a coffee shop.  Sometimes Starbucks, or a local chain called Serious Coffee.  At Starbucks, the only thing I can tolerate is an Americano with an extra shot of espresso.  At Serious, all their coffee is good. 

We have an espresso machine, so I mostly drink Americanos;  espresso topped up with water.  20g of finely ground coffee.  I use Ethical Bean Sweet Espresso Roast exclusively.  I take it with a bit of cream.  It makes a strong, but smooth, cup of coffee. 

If I am camping, I use an Aeropress. 


2 scoops of medium-fine grind.  Add boiling water to the top line.  Give it a stir.  Wait 2 minutes.  Give it another gentle stir.  Wait 10 seconds and press.  For this I like Ethical Bean Exotic Roast.  Makes a nice cup.

Usually at home since that's where i spend 99% of my time and it's most often drip Starbucks French Roast cause its cheap at Costco. Sometimes I'll buy some Illy espresso for the espresso machine (I don't like to waste money on good quality beans because I don't have a burr grinder). I always take it black.

Locally we're blessed with two or three decent third wave coffee shops, one better than the others by a fair bit but i know the people who own and operate it are unvaccinated so I'm taking a break from there. Sometimes I like a cortado, but usually I'm an Americano guy.

We used to buy bargain Maxwell House and drip it through a standard machine... cost of coffe about $7/month or pennies per cup.

Lately we have decided to indulge ourselves in Kicking Horse, Starbucks or European like Lavazza.

Does the machine really matter ?

Not as much as the beans, the grind or the water.

I have no issue with drip coffee brewers.  I love the drip coffee from my local coffee shop (not Starbucks).

But the machinery certainly make a difference to taste, but it comes down to personal preference.   
Just like how your coffee is ground makes a difference to the taste as well. 

But whether that’s an improvement to you is not for me to say.  If you put 3 teaspoons of sugar in it, then it can probably be run through your dirty socks and not make much difference to the taste.

3. All coffee is drunk black in our house unless you are a valued guest.

If you’re happy with pre-ground Maxwell House through your $20 Black and Decker drip coffee maker, who am I to say that you’re wrong?  I would drink your coffee and likely be perfectly content with it. 

But I am not up on which drip coffee maker is a good one, or not.

I recommend you buy a good French press and a good grinder.   Watch the dude’s videos (above post) for how to make good French press coffee then experiment with it. 

But, you might not like French press coffee.  Or you might not want to spend more time making a coffee than dumping it in and pressing a button.  Or you might not want to spend money on a grinder.  If this is the case, ignore everything I just said cuz your coffee is perfect right now if you like it.

I'm more of a Black & Decker/Maxwell House guy fer sure. My daughter bought me a small grinder and coffee press.  A bit too much effort needs to go into using these to make a thermos full for work though.

I'll never forget the cowboy coffee brewed on an oil stove on old fish boats I worked on.  You had to fasten the pot so it didn't tip over. A couple of hours of sloshing back and forth in rough seas sure made for a strong cup. Stand your spoon up in it on a calm day.

I am too much in my head to enjoy coffee most of the time.  If I'm noticing how good the coffee is, I am likely not in my kitchen.
