We have all, by now, heard about the horrific conditions in the California home, where 13 children were held captive. Ironically, the home was also registered as a private school.

Informal schooling arrangements have been defended, by some, as an expression of freedom from the government, a way that children could be educated far from the eyes of a prying, "big-brother"-like  nanny state. The situation detailed in 13 siblings ages 2 to 29 'held captive' by parents, some shackled, officials say - ABC News  shows the dark side of such arrangements. For one thing, exposure of the children to schools would disclose alarming situations rather quickly, to Child Protective Services, where warranted.

Not that I am a fan of CPS. I have had some bad experiences indeed. Once, a special ed meeting for our special needs younger broke up in disorder after the chair wanted to declassify the autistic son. My wife was visibly upset. CPS was called on her for coming back to the school to ask for another meeting. That complaint was dismissed as "unfounded."

The second one was for lecturing my son on bullying. He didn't complain, quite the contrary, but it was pried out of him. The third one, the most ridiculous of all, sprang from a "hickey" my older son gave my younger son while playing. Neither are gay or violent.

But I digress. Children who are never seen nor exposed to the eyes of the schools or even neighbors may have grievous harm inflicted on them. I believe total privacy is a bad thing. There must be a balance.

This family was deeply religious apparently.  As usual, people with God on their side think whatever horrors they commit are justifiable.  Perhaps the key to truly civilizing humanity is to eliminate religion.

They need to be relocated into their own homeland if we can't resolve these things.

I don't know if the elimination of religion will truly civilize humanity, but I do know humanity will never be truly civilized while religion exists.

Home schooling is often associated with religious kooks who don't want their kids to be "indoctrinated" with liberal ideas in public schools.  That might not be the case for everybody who chooses home schooling, but it is probably true in many cases.

And, religious kooks often have some pretty strange ideas when it comes to medical care and discipline of children.  We sometimes hear cases of children who die of easily treatable conditions because their parents spurned real medicine and thought prayer would make their kids better. We sometimes hear cases of children beaten or tortured to death by demented parents trying to purge the sin out of their children.

So it wouldn't be very surprising to find out that these kids in particular were the victims of bad parenting inspired by weird religious ideas.

But I digress. Children who are never seen nor exposed to the eyes of the schools or even neighbors may have grievous harm inflicted on them. I believe total privacy is a bad thing. There must be a balance.

I think this is an important point.  Surely someone would have noticed something was wrong if these kids interacted with the general public once in a while.

But how?  How can you make people at least once in a while bring their kids out into the public sphere so that the rest of the world can see that the kids are doing well?

No such place. I don't think Libertarians, by and large, are all that religious or moralistic.

There was little religion in Russia until Putin decided he had a use for it. From all accounts Russia was a pretty shitty and violent society then too, with drunken wife beating and child abuse the norm, especially beyond Moscow, where all the important people lived. I don't think society is all that loving and peaceful in China either.

Well, in France, pren-natal and post-natal medical visits are mandatory. And it's also mandatory for children to be given regular assessments by health professionals. If you don't bring your kid in they'll come visiting.

Children under the age of six are evaluated by team of pediatricians, nurses, psychologists, and social workers in the Centres deProtection Maternelle et Infantile.[23] A decree provides for a number of mandatory medical visits: nine during the first year, one of them to take place within eight days of birth, one during the ninth or tenth month, three between the thirteenth month and the twenty-fifth month, and finally two for each of the next four years.[24]  When parents fail to bring their children in for regular checkups, social workers are dispatched to the family home.  After the age of six, children’s health is monitored by school health services.  Mandatory physical and psychological checkups take place when the children are ages six, nine, twelve, and fifteen.[25]  In addition to monitoring children’s health, schools also have the responsibility to educate children on health issues including, for example, nutrition, sexual education, and addictions (drugs, alcohol, & tobac

That's why I'm not entirely confident the elimination of religion will entirely do the trick.  I am, however, utterly convinced of my latter point.

Freedom, though.  You won't have a war on Jesus.

I doubt it, witness the current "raw water" craze as well as the anti vaccination crowd. Neither of these come out of religion but both ignore history and well established science. No doubt most of these same people would berate global warning skeptics for "ignoring the science" Humans may be intelligent but they sure are stupid.
