There was little religion in Russia until Putin decided he had a use for it. From all accounts Russia was a pretty shitty and violent society then too, with drunken wife beating and child abuse the norm, especially beyond Moscow, where all the important people lived. I don't think society is all that loving and peaceful in China either.

That's why I'm not entirely confident the elimination of religion will entirely do the trick.  I am, however, utterly convinced of my latter point.
