Celebrity Culture
« on: May 28, 2019, 06:33:25 pm »
Once in the late 1980s I was by myself in New York City, wandering around. I was going through Times Square when I saw Gregory Hines walking with a small group of people. Within about 30 seconds---less than a minute for sure---I saw Robert Palmer walk by.
Then, about 20 years later, they both died within a couple of days of each other.
Just thought I'd share.

I also shook hands with Bob McGrath of Sesame Street, interviewed Carole Pope, did hot knives with Soul Asylum pre-Winona, saw Ron Perlman walking his dog, and hung out with the most of the Crash Test Dummies in university (does that count? They were on SNL. That's pretty good.).

Were you ever invited by Burton Cummings to attend one of his after-hours parties?

My sister partied with Burton once, as well as with either the Ohio Express or the 1910 Fruitgum Company (I forget which) when she was just a teenybopper herself. I remember this stressed my mother out greatly. But I've only ever run into Burton once, walking into Eaton's on Portage Avenue around 1986 as I was walking out.
Although I did see him at the Paddlewheel in the Bay along with Neil Young as part of a personal appearance thing for the Shakin All Over Winnipeg Rock and Roll Reunion in the mid-80s. The only time I've ever been in the same room as Neil as I've found his concert tickets recently to be a trifle dear.

I got to go sailing with Gord Lightfoot on his sailboat out of Toronto one time. Three of us aboard and we tried to kill that boat. Then we got really drunk. Damn that was fun.

My brother-in-law and cousin at separate times, were invited to his place. He hung around a nightclub that no longer exists, called the Palladium in south Fort Garry.  I heard he invites many people over, and many of them younger (in their 20s or so).

In summer of 2007, I was helping out at a cycle shops 50th anniversary in Calgary (Bow Valley Cycle), and picked April Wine up in the company van from their Hotel.  They removed around 500 bikes on the second floor, and replaced it with a makeshift stage, and sound equipment for the band to do a concert.  It was a good time.

My wife's boss came home from buying groceries once and there were these two guys in their driveway holding a piece of paper and looking at their house. He figured correctly that they were Neil fans come to check out his teenage house (which my wife's boss owns and lives in). His wife thought they looked sketchy and said she'd stay in the car while he dealt with them. As he approached, he noticed one had really nice boots. Then he looked at his face. Bob Dylan.
Bob got the full tour and acted like a bit of a fanboy apparently. The story was spread far and wide and they even asked Bob about it in an interview once in Rolling Stone.

So apparently Julia Roberts showed up at the Falafel Place in my neighbourhood yesterday and everybody was shocked she had to wait in line.
It's pretty good falafel though, so it's worth it.
