You're right. Turns out it comes from the Ukrainian "gaci" or "gotchie." And t's not exclusively Manitoba. Saskatchean wears gitch too.

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/gitch

West of Lloydminster it's "ginch" or "gonch".

Less than "gitch" IMO.

Does anybody else yell "Halloween Apples" rather than 'Trick or Treat" or is that also just a Winnipeg thing?

Maybe just a Prairie thing. It appears to have been used in Edmonton as well.

Nobody yelled that in my bit of central Alberta last night.

Sure got far fewer kids though.  Less than half normal.

Anyone want a small bag of Doritos?

Yeah, I give chips out because if I gave chocolate, there would be a lot of disappointed kids.  There's no way any of it would last until they showed up.

I shut the curtain and turned the lights out. My dog is suspicious of children and costumes and would go insane. But I don't think they sing Halloween Apples so much anymore. Coincidentally, I just came upon a history of it on twitter.
