Hmmm….   Me either.

Do you think they don’t exist anywhere, or that there aren’t as many as FOX would have you believe?

I think there is a moral panic on the left, and they are pervasive on social media, from what I can tell.  Things like the outrage over the views of Rowling and the evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins come to mind as examples.

I know 2 woke people.  They are in their 20's and early 30's.  They have university degrees.  They went into university not woke then came out woke.

There are people with unreasonable ideas on both sides of the spectrum.  What is odd is that most of them used to be on the right, the tea party crazy types who I guess have been replaced by the Trumpsters.  And then you had your hippies and anarchists on the left but those weren't too numerous.

But now the number of unreasonable people on the left has increased exponentially with the the recent woke/SJW movement.  Which is sad.  I miss the old lefties who basically cared about Marxism/anti-capitalism, anti-war, environmentalism, LGBT rights, feminism, and free expression.  They still said lots of dumb stuff but they weren't insane and now everyone's a f**king racist and offended.

The last 7 years or so the left has accomplished one really big thing at least which is the #metoo movement.  Harassment is no long tolerated in workplaces etc and those people are rightly cancelled because that stuff is against the law.  I'm much happier living in a post-#metoo world.  For whatever reason the BLM movement didn't do a whole lot in terms of police reform, which is sad.

Concerns that exist:  a school, statue, or pub is named after somebody who did something awful 200 years ago.

Moral panic: doctors performing double mastectomies on healthy adolescent girls.

Moral Panic, yes... Does that happen ?

Do they look like the cartoon that Shady posted ?

Why are they "woke" people versus people who have "woke" opinions such as you or I ?

Yes, the education system has turned into a propaganda machine, churning out woke activists.  Teachers have become political brainwashers instead of actual teachers, teaching math, science, history, etc.

1. "Gender affirming" treatments (especially puberty blockers and hormones but also mastectomies) are certainly being performed on adolescents. That has nothing to do with LoTT, that's a verifiable fact.
 -k

Maybe. I've yet to see anyone quantify how big an issue that is and people like you tend to lump any gender affirming approach (including social transitions) into the same pile.

Also it's wild that TERFs lose their minds over what I guarantee are exceedingly rare cases of surgeries for transgender adolescents and say sweet FA about gender affirming surgeries for cisgender adolescents, like breast implants and the like.

2.  Your "whatabout" a few posts back is the purest specimen ever observed in nature.

Nah, you're drunk/high if you think that's the case. there was a clear through line in the conversation.

This is a tale as old as time, people often change political views when they are exposed to different ways of thinking and points of view.

Alway hilarious to see people who don't have kids and haven't set foot in a classroom in decades make such definitive declarations about the state of education.

I just had a friend visit who is a schoolteacher in a small town in southern Texas.  She's as liberal as me.

Nothing she talked about was alarming in terms of parental/educator exchanges.  Someone expressed concern about books of a certain ilk being in the library, and the concerns were addressed and nothing was changed for example.

Why is someone a conservative or a progressive versus someone who has conservative or progressive opinions?

These friends just live and breathe this sh!t.  I don't dislike them but a lot of their opinions are dumb IMO.

Here's a funny one.

An assistant high school football coach starts praying in the middle of the field after games. The school asked him to not do so in such a public way so as not to be seen as the school endorsing a particular faith. Coach refuses, the school puts him on paid administrative leave until the end of the season, his contract expires and instead of reapplying, the guy sues the school district, saying it had violated his right to free speech and the free exercise of religion. Case goes all the way to the SCOTUS whose conservative nutbar faction ruled in his favour.

Then things get weird.

Quote
When the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in June that Bremerton assistant football coach Joseph Kennedy had the right to pray on the field, it wasn’t widely understood then that the court had also ordered the school district to give him his job back.

The day of the ruling, Fox News host Sean Hannity expressed doubts the district would follow through. But one of Kennedy’s lawyers clarified that they had no choice: “We’re ready to have that fight. If they want to defy the Supreme Court, I think they’re gonna realize they made a serious mistake.”

Kennedy was sunnier about it all.

“As soon as the school district says ‘Hey, come back,’ I am there, first flight,” he said.

So the school district has been flummoxed about what’s happened since. They complied by offering to reinstate him, they say, and now the football season is in full swing. But Kennedy is nowhere near the sidelines.

“He’s had the paperwork for his reinstatement since August 8th, and we haven’t gotten so much as a phone call,” says Karen Bevers, spokesperson for Bremerton schools.

Seems he's far too busy doing the right wing outrage circuit, meeting with Mike Pence and evangelist Franklin Graham and even Trump himself, to be bothered to come back. But the wild part was what happened during the court case:

Quote
At one point during oral arguments, as a different school district attorney was saying the narrative that had been spun didn’t fit with the facts — that the coach’s prayers were neither silent nor solitary, nor was he fired — Justice Samuel Alito interrupted him, saying “I know that you want to make this very complicated.”

Alito persisted in asking about the coach being fired — six times he said it, to the point that the lawyer finally corrected him. Which is a touchy thing to do with a Supreme Court justice.

“It’s not a question of firing, and in fact, he was put on paid leave,” the lawyer pleaded, fruitlessly, to Alito.

In the end, it all was too complicated. The effect of the court’s order is that Bremerton has to reinstate someone who didn’t apply for the job then and doesn’t appear eager for it now. It’s as if the justices wanted to script an ending for a Christian redemption movie. But real life isn’t cooperating.
