Yes there's that old adage about boats that describes "a round hole in the water, surrounded by wood, into which one pours money" But gawd I like fresh caught seafood!

On Pawn Stars once they had a big boat someone was trying to sell, they wouldn't buy it, they said boats are "a money pit".  Bad investment i guess.

That's unbelievably cool.  If my dad were younger he'd love to do that with me I think, though not sure he's ever sailed, but he's been around fishing boats and whatnot his whole life.

I would think that's far more interesting of a way to travel than by long-distance car rides, which bore me to death often, and you're stuck in such a confined space for so long.  Would be fun to have the sun and wind on your face, though i don't know how these larger sailboats work.

Does the coast guard ever give you much grief?  Once you cross into American waters do they tend to leave you alone?  And going into shore painless in terms of authorities bothering you?

Well for starters I bought my boat in the States so it already had American registration numbers on it. But no, once you cross the border and jump on the boat, nobody bothers you, including the Coast Guard. They're just around in case you get into trouble, which luckily i never really did. (somehow) Going ashore to tie up for a night and maybe get the laundry done and restore the land legs is no different than pulling off the interstate at a motel for the night.
My mom was not a boater, especially ones that tipped over a bit when the wind blows, but I did convince her to come for a visit in mid January one year. She was in Toronto and I was in Key Biscayne. Lets see, minus 25 vs plus 25? She had a good week.

Yeah I wouldn't buy a new boat unless you have money to burn They drop just lake cars as soon as you drive them "off the lot". But well maintained used ones are the better deals.

Anchorages?  Is that being an area near shore you can just set your anchor and stay there for awhile?

Make sure it is a protected area like a bay. Waves build as they approach shore, so you need to have something to block them.

I anchored up one night on the Bahama Banks while on my way back to Florida. The wind had pretty much died, I was a bit tired, and I hate motoring unless I have to. Kind of an interesting situation, there is no land in sight as far as the eye can see, but the water is watm and about 15 feet deep. I threw a Danforth over then rigged up my string hammock between the head stay and the head stay halyard. The boat rocked and rolled a bit but the hammock stayed level. Next am there was some wind so yank the anchor, hoist sail, fire up the coffee pot. With a little Tia Maria of course.

The Benetau I mentioned is a bit larger than I really need but she's roomy and well outfitted, especially for a live aboard. And it's parked not far from home so not a big deal to go take a look.

Have you see her yet?
