You tell me.

You are focusing on the many bad deeds of the church, and those are definitely significant factors but there are also sociological factors you are missing.

-Hedonistic society, ie. the sexual revolution, consumer society etc.
-Demise of socialization in groups, such as community clubs etc.
-The rise of cultural forces such as humanism, intellectualism, atheism
-Better forms of entertainment than the church organ (go on I dare you to challenge me on that one)

And none of these changes are 'bad' either.  Indeed I would challenge any societal change as altogether 'bad' even when overwhelmingly bad. And I also think that I'm on shaky ground there, but so be it.

I will say that anything that returns us to a natural harmony with the environment without making us unhealthy is perhaps "good".

It's been a long week... so I'm kind of babbling here... have mercy...
