FYI religion is dying.

I get that you hate it, but I don't care.

It is….  And that’s because churches can’t burn you alive for blasphemy any longer…. Or promoting crazy ideas like the Earth isn’t the centre of the universe.

If I was threatened with being burnt alive, I’d shut up and believe.

That explains up to the 1500s.  What about lately ?

hmmmm….  How much time have you got?

The Catholic Church helped Nazis escape Germany after the war.  Killing 6 million Jews wasn’t bad enough for the church not to help these poor fellows being harangued by the liberators.

Southern US Christians lynching black people was a religious ritual for many.

If you want something more local, just look at the treatment of indigenous people by the churches here in Canada. An act of attempted genocide.

The fight against gay marriage was completely on religious grounds.

You tell me.

You are focusing on the many bad deeds of the church, and those are definitely significant factors but there are also sociological factors you are missing.

-Hedonistic society, ie. the sexual revolution, consumer society etc.
-Demise of socialization in groups, such as community clubs etc.
-The rise of cultural forces such as humanism, intellectualism, atheism
-Better forms of entertainment than the church organ (go on I dare you to challenge me on that one)

And none of these changes are 'bad' either.  Indeed I would challenge any societal change as altogether 'bad' even when overwhelmingly bad. And I also think that I'm on shaky ground there, but so be it.

I will say that anything that returns us to a natural harmony with the environment without making us unhealthy is perhaps "good".

It's been a long week... so I'm kind of babbling here... have mercy...

Religious? Yeah, right. I know other gays who go to church regularly, and conservatives who don't.

Although I think I know what you mean, that religious arguments were used. But only in the sense that I use gloves to clean up dog poo. The gloves didn't actually clean it up, my hand did, utilizing the glove as a superficial protection.

Sorry that's the best metaphor I can think of to describe it.

I've been reading the Bible. There probably was no Sodom. So what? It's a parable used to illustrate a point. No more, no less.
