Anthony Bourdain
« on: June 08, 2018, 11:37:20 am »
Now that's a bit of a shocker, Tony dead at only 61. I often enjoyed his shows. May he rest in peace.

I am just reading he was found in his hotel room dead of an apparent suicide.

That's terrible. I loved his shows, books and his approach to life. It seemed like he was over the hump having kicked his addictions, having a family and a super successful career. Seemed like a real survivor. Wonder what was wrong.

Apparently he was found by a friend so if there happened to be a note left it might take some time to be discussed publicly, if ever.

Yeah, just heard it on the radio. I don't follow any of the celebrity chefs so I really don't know much about him. Perhaps it had nothing to do with success, but more about health. Robin Williams was diagnosed after his suicide with Lewy Body Dementia, but for months had many symptoms that were never properly diagnosed (he was misdiagnosed with Parkinsons). One of the problems with the misdiagnosis is that while Parkinsons medications will relieve some of the symptoms, they make others much worse. Unfortunately there is no cure, but perhaps a few more years were possible in his case.

He was a lot more than a celebrity chef. An excellent writer and speaker, a real man of the world in the best way. Food was the vehicle he used to better learn about and understand people.

He did a show from Vancouver a few years ago which included everything from Japadogs and Tojo's sushi to whipping up a meal and talking  with Vij and John Bishop. The shows he did from Quebec and Newfoundland with his two buddies from Montreal's Joe Beef were very entertaining. The Newfoundland episode just aired last month.

Two wealthy successful famous people commit suicide within a couple of days of each other.  ...it's a reminder that nobody is immune from mental health issues and that even people who seem from the outside to have everything you could ask for still have their own demons to face.

It seems like a lot of artists and performers (and I suppose Bourdain was both of those things to some degree) have struggled with mental illness of some sort, often manic-depressive disorder.  I have often wondered if there is a connection between manic-depression and creativity... perhaps the rollercoaster of emotions simply demands expression in some way, and for some that's harnessed in art.

It's amazing how many people this has affected. Bourdain was a guy many wish they were, self included. He was certainly one of a kind and unique to his profession.  I've never suffered from depression so I can't appreciate what it does to people. Perhaps that's a blessing of not being very creative.

His cook books are great reads even if you don't use the recipes, which are very good if you aspire to proper French cooking.

I have to admit, this hit me hard.

It's strange how we somehow become emotionally attached to people who we don't know, have never met, have never even heard of us.   I found myself very surprised how stressed out I was over Simone Giertz's brain tumor last month.    Just a random person with a youtube channel I like, and yet... it felt personal.

I'm legit saddened that I won't get to see any more shows from him.

Watched his Berlin episode last night. His Newfoundland and Quebec episodes with the Joe Beef guys were very entertaining.

I think what made him so popular was that, even though he had a great eloquent voice, there wasn't an ounce of snob in him. In fact he was more a man of the people than anyone I have ever seen on TV. He found joy in the simplest of life's pleasures.

He will be missed. I would really love to know what caused him to decide life wasn't worth it anymore.
