China isn't completely propped up by the West the way the Saudis are.

The Saudis have money to burn...

Their oil props them up.

Completely insane.  I can’t believe that anyone there, even with their wealth would authorize that.

Especially as his best years are well behind him and he has absolutely no desire, other than the money, to play for a Saudi club

Pocket change to the Saudi investment group.  They manage $600 billion dollars in assets.  I think the ultimate goal is a “super league” where they poach all the best players.   If they can crack into global tv revenue if people want to watch that, they will be making buckets of money.   It might soften the blow once oil consumption declines.

They already own and sponsor several Premier League teams.

This is wild:

Lionel Messi picks MLS's Inter Miami in a move that stuns soccer after exit from Paris Saint-Germain

Quote
It was widely believed that Messi eventually would choose to play for Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia, following longtime rival Cristiano Ronaldo to a nation where some clubs now are funded by the state’s sovereign wealth fund. Going back to Barcelona, a storied franchise where he spent most of his career, was another possibility.

But in the end, he made the call that surprised many. Messi is joining MLS. He said in the interviews Wednesday that some final details still need to be worked out, but that he has made the call to “continue my path” in Miami.

He better bump up his security, they're gonna try and take a bonesaw to him.
