It's a tragic loss of culture.

Let's be honest though.  It's "OUR" culture - however you want to define "US".  People on my Facebook feed are disgusted that we care more about this than ... some other things but we care more because it's US.

We're not French citizens, but we are culturally and racially close so we care more.  That's just it - we care MORE than we care about what happens in Mecca or Nairobi.  Is it "bad" ?  I don't know if it is - and certainly it takes you to some uncomfortable calculus when you realize that 100 Kenyans dying won't make the same impact, and isn't as newsworthy as 10 Canadians.

But that's the way it is and we shouldn't even be ashamed of it, at least on this level.

I am not a follower of any religion but when you walk through that building you can't help but be inspired by the architecture, the artistry, the craftman ship that surrounds you wherever you look. It seemed much more than a material thing to me. I had the good fortune to visit the "Sacred Family" in Barcelona as well and felt a similar hit from it.

I'm not religious at all but one of my favourite things in London was Evensong at St. Pauls. If I could drag myself out of bed after a post flight nap in time, I would head down there and listen to the choir before hitting a Shepherd Neame pub near Smithfield for some dinner. Sitting there listening to that wonderful choir in that beautiful building was good for whatever ailed me at the time. Hopefully, Notre Dame will continue to inspire people for another 800 years.

"US" would probably mean western civilization.  We're just more connected historically and culturally to Europe, that doesn't make things elsewhere less tragic, just sometimes less "newsworthy" I suppose.  I agree i don't think that makes us bad people.  I'm sure ie: Africans and Asians care more about what happens in those places than Europe or South America, for example.

I was surprised by some of the footage I saw that was from inside the cathedral after things had cooled down. I was expecting total destruction of the interior and so it was good to see that it was less so. Certain things such as that huge organ (8000 pipes) had survived except for a little water damage. It seems the fire as scary as it looked was mostly focused in the attic, where they say it started. I wonder what the plan is to do with the contents that did survive while they begin the repairs. I would imagine for instance that the portion of the roof that didn't collapse might have to be removed if it's structural integrity has been compromised, and I would think you'd want to get precious items out of the way of possible damage during that process. Perhaps the will portion out pieces to various other cathedrals, art galleries, etc. for the time being.

Ah I see, so it was basically a "house cleaning" event. They do tend to attract them it seems.

I walked by it two weeks ago, but I had just seen Westminster Abbey and an overwhelming number of other amazing old churches and architecture in general, so I just took a picture and kept walking. Figured it would still be there next time.

I am betting that if it was terrorism that the government will go out of its way to suppress that information getting out for fear of the public reaction.

France: Fire of Saint-Sulpice church, investigators favor the criminal track

Source of the article: http://www.evangeliques.info .
Sunday, March 17, in the early afternoon, a fire broke out on one of the doors of the Catholic Church Saint-Sulpice in the 6th arrondissement of Paris. The fire is quickly controlled by firefighters. An investigation is opened. According to initial analyzes, the origin of the fire is criminal, reports the weekly La Vie quoting LCI television channel . The motive and the identity of the suspect remain to be determined. The week before, an individual has already launched a piece of inflamed fabric on the facade, always according to LCI .

WTF? An arson in a French cathedral one month ago and you think it is not relevant to the current discussion?

I guess we all expected the right wing conspiracy theorists would get out of their basements to try to make a good "story" up about his issue. It looks now that an electrical short circuit was the cause. Not surprising given the age of the building and all the tools being used in the ongoing restoration project. They may have to go back to focusing on 9-11.

Give me a break. It is too early for the investigators to say anything and the desperation by people like you to conclude that arson was not the cause is as bad as people insisting that it was was the cause.

Agreed. That is why I never put forth a theory - can you say the same?

Where did put a theory? I posted a link to a arson fire one month ago and made no comment or suggestion. You responded with nonsense.
