People faking hate crimes *is* a real thing and these fakes distort our perception on the prevalence of the problem even though some subset of the crimes are real. What also has to be noted is many hate crimes are committed by unknown people who are never caught (i.e. knocking over grave stones at a Jewish cemetery). For these examples is simply wrong to say that they are "real" hate crimes because we have no way to know.
Also, note the use of the "seems" in my statement which should have made it clear I was suggesting perception and not making a comment on fact. More importantly, out the 3 hate crimes that have been reported widely in the news recently (Winnipeg cafe, Smolette and NZ) 2 were fake which should be enough for anyone to be concerned about fake hate crimes. The fact that Trudeau is flogging the perceived problem for partisan political purposes should also be a concern because it creates incentives for partisans to exaggerate the problem.
