Missed this group... As I got older I only had a bare grasp of what was going on.  I actually missed Nirvana until late... I loved Kurt Kirkwood's guitar and Grateful Dead influences so I got into Nirvana sideways when the Puppets joined them onstage.

Will check out Melvins now.

All of these were discovered via Spin Magazine for me and SST Records, which housed the best of this genre.

4AD, Homestead, Factory etc. were good too but not as much.

Very weird. I also saw the Melvins in the same bar. More recently thoigh (less than 10 years ago).
I only went to see old friends. I went to a million punk rock shows in my youth but only because that was what the crowd I hung out with was into. I was always more a jazz guy.
Melvins are really good, in that they are different and musically interesting. I can't stand listening to it though.

That's some bar.

I'm a boomer but I used to know old hippies and older guys - even suits - who would go see anything weird...

An ongoing fascination with me is the death of the genre. Check these guys out:

The beat could be from hip hop or it could be from Suicide. The vocals aren't rap, but they aren't quite John Cooper Clark. The guest verse on this track is by Amy Taylor who is the singer of the Aussie punk band Amyl and the Sniffers. It's a dozen different influences and something new.

I thought somebody wrote about Soul Asylum here ?  I wasn't really into them... listened to this

Reminds me of The Watchmen (from Winnipeg I think) - vocal and attitude based ... definitely in the genre but nothing ground breaking for me in that song at least.  It's odd - it's definitely of the 90s, would have sounded ahead of its time in the early 80s, or 70s and yet nothing sparkly there for me.  Strange to me...

I don’t know about Nirvana specifically, but don’t discount artists like Neil Young and Elvis Costello’s influences on the grunge genre.

Plus, the blues has influenced the grunge guitar sounds, particularly solos of course.  Rock and roll guitar cannot ever escape the blues.

Neil Young's links to grunge I think are purely coincidental.  Neil Young is a farmer so he wears flannel and tattered clothing.  Seattle grunge folks were from working class families and stole clothes from their dad's closets.  Grunge is also part punk, a blue collar anti-elitist movement, a rebellion from the excesses of 70's arena rock and 80's hair metal and pop etc.

I actually don't think Nirvana invented much of anything.  Their music existed throughout the 80's but wasn't popular.  They wrote simple good songs that hit at the right place at the right time.  If anything, they added a very melancholy element to music, since Cobain was clearly a very depressed dude from a broken family, which teens in the 90's from broken homes could relate to, and angsty and depressed teens in general, which is a lot of them lol.

It is also exactly the style of music that Crazy Horse has always created.

You guys don’t know much about Grunge.  Neil Young is the “grandfather of Grunge”.

Clearly not west coasters…

I don't think that Nirvana was much influenced by Young.  I just scanned a bunch of things he said he liked... No Neil Young or Dinosaur Jr even though he quoted Rust Never Sleeps in his suicide note and asked Dinosaur Jr guitarist Macis to join his band.

If Elvis never listed southern gospel as an influence in a Teen Beat article, would that mean he wasn't influenced by it?

I guess not - but I spent about 20 minutes reading "best band" and "best song" lists that he himself wrote with his own handwriting, said in his own words... probably 50-100 groups, songs etc.

Kind of strange that he wouldn't mention Young but it's all speculation from either of us here.  In terms of the "sound", he was 100% into "American ****" - that was what he listened to, and where he played.  So, yes, he listed Meet the Beatles and Aerosmith in an interview here and there but he played with the meat puppets, listed every record by Melvins, a couple by Half Japanese and some group called The Wipers that I never heard of...

Anyway... as I say it's guesswork.
