All purpose music thread!
« on: February 01, 2017, 10:44:31 pm »
Even though I am pretty awful at playing music, I feel that attempting to learn has helped me appreciate it more.  It has taught me to listen to each individual instrument in the band and listen to what each musician is doing, and given me more of an idea of what is actually going on in the song.

Iron Maiden and Lynyrd Skynyrd are two bands that I have increased admiration for as I've begun to appreciate the musicianship involved... in particular, I didn't really pay much attention to the bass until I started playing it myself.  This song by the Greg Kihn Band is another one that I didn't fully appreciate until I learned to listen to it:

I play the fiddle really well - or I did.  I haven't played in years.  It really disappoints my family that I quit.  I always plan to pick it up, but life always gets in the way.

That's rad af. Pick it up again. You need to just decide to do it. Go into a shop one day and buy a new fiddle. That'll inspire you to monkey around again.

I have a really expensive one - I don't think I'd be satisfied with another one, tbh.

You've got to just do it then. Pick that bastard up and go.

So Kimmy, what's your favourite genre of music?  You seem like a riddle wrapped in an enigma  :P

Gosh... that's like trying to decide what my favorite food is. I like most genres, but I'm fussy about what music within each genre I like. I can be happily listening to a playlist, then something comes along and I find myself thinking "****, this is total dog ****. why the **** am I listening to this crap?"

I like "classic rock", "modern rock", "Southern rock", some heavy metal (but not "death metal"...), some classical instrumental (but not people screaming in Italian...) ...I even like some country music and some hip-hop.

The only music I really really do not like is "lite hitz". Anything playing on your local "lite hitz" station would probably cause me to fly into a rage.  When I walk past the local "lite hitz" station ("Kim City's At-Work-Network!") I always have to fight the urge to walk in the door and shout "Just STOP! OKAY? Just **** STOP."

I'm kind of weird that way with music too.  I like country from the early 2000s, but I also like alternative rock.  I love Marianas Trench.

I like just about everything but smooth jazz and some low effort pop.

Was listening to some Washington Phillips and came across this version of Denomination Blues.  Love Knopfler's picking...

I play the guitar, poorly, but I'll never be bored again.

I was never a big Rush fan growing up, but as far as musicianship goes if you take time to listen to the older stuff it's incredible and amazing how big a band with only 3 guys in can sound.  Then again for a long time they had perhaps the best drummer in the world a top ten bassist and a guitar player who has been ranked very highly as well, they are still under rated.

Also, i like the sound and the impact that can have more than i like songs, i want something that sounds good and has great dynamics, it doesn't really matter what genre it is.  http://dr.loudness-war.info/  that is an interesting site, if you're like my most of the music that grabs you would be on the higher end of the dynamic range scale, of course there are always exceptions.

I love that loudness war database! I've been using it for a few years to find great albums. It's a damn shame what the industry did to sound engineering.

This Mingus small group doing a pretty straight swing/bop Take the A Train not far removed from how Ellington's band might have done it at the time. Then Dolphy comes in and takes it out there. Mingus stops everything to take a **** and just let Dolphy go. And his solo explores every harmonic corner of that song, never losing it. Listen close. It's always there, even though there's so many notes and they're all over the place, every chord change is still in there. Then he lands it and the band lands with him, and Ellington never sounds quite the same again.

On the rock stations in my city they've started to splice in pop songs (like the Weeknd) into the rotation, as well as pop-ish songs that don't sound very rock-like.  Sad that rock is basically dead, the industy on its last legs.  A young generation now growing up with hardly any new big acts.  Thanks Napster.
