Metric, of Toronto.
Synth-pop band Metric was a staple of the "Modern Rock" station I listened to when I lived in Edmonton, and I always thought they kind of, uhhhh, sucked. A kitschy little act largely propelled by Emily Haines and her too-cutesy vocals and her cute little behind in her tiny white shorts.
Then I left Edmonton, and didn't have much contact with Metric or any other "modern rock" for a while. Then a couple of years ago I stumbled onto Metric's 2012 "Synthetica" CD, and was completely blown away. Emily had apparently gotten over her nose-candy problems and proceeded to create some great music.
Trivia: although Emily is as white as the driven snow, she's actually from New Delhi, India.
