I dunno.  They're just weak and tired.

Imagine being cursed to do the same job you did in your youth.

They were still perfectly capable musicians then (though I think the guys in that video are mostly all dead now). I just hate that period (late 90s/early aughts?) when Paul Anka was singing Smells Like Teen Spirit and it was all cleverly ironic and totally unlistenable.

Question for you under 55 years old:

Do you appreciate The Band ?

They apparently are getting some hype due to a TIFF documentary showing this week.  I'm wondering if they will get their due.

I like The Band, but it doesn't get enough credit.

Arguably THE most influential, and greatest Canadian Rock Band.  Arguably.

I think most people would say Rush.

Geddy Lee singing "Take off" with Bob & Doug was my favourite. Ten bucks is ten bucks.

Rush has its value.  I mean I like every genre and every niche.

But in terms of pure weight... I dunno The Band seems to be a real essential link between old timey folky stuff and the rock.

New question:

What is the last rock band ?

I would say Radiohead is the 2nd last one... and they melted into ambient electronica last album I listened to.  And The Darkness is the bow on the package.

Michael have you not listened to any rock radio the last 15 years??

There last amazing rock band to take the rock world by storm (besides Greta Van Fleet, but they kinda don't count haha) is Royal Blood from the UK:

On the Canadian rock scene, July Talk from Toronto are amazing and from the last 5 years or so:

Both these bands have a bit of influence in their sound from the "indie scene", but unlike most modern indie bands they actually use distorted guitars.

Just because rock bands exist doesn't mean rock isn't dead. There are still plenty of jazz musicians but jazz died around the 1960s.
Once there are no revolutionary innovations and it starts regurgitating the same patterns and ideas, it may still be nice to listen to but it's dead as an art form.

agree with bubbs

I heard a live bluegrass last night, but if I stopped 100 people on the street (in Calgary) they couldn't name the top bluegrass band in Canada or the world.

Well, I would say rock is dead as a pop culture movement and virtually dead as a commercial industry.  It's the same as jazz...jazz isn't completely dead as an art-form, but it's dead as pop culture.

Heavy metal is probably the healthiest rock sub-genre, it's also still fairly big in Northern Europe, but again it doesn't have any pop culture influence like it still did 10-15 years ago.

It's amazing that just about every other young person was rocking out on Guitar Hero and Rock Band games 10 years ago and then since that time young people now have turned off of rock so quickly.  Millennials are much more into hip-hop...

Ok so if we agree that rock is dead as pop culture, we need to determine the last great rock band that made an impact in pop culture.

MH says Radiohead and The Darkness.  Radiohead is a bit too old i think.  They got big in the mid and late 90's.  The Darkness came on the scene in 2003 but IMO weren't quite popular enough.  Maybe someone like System of a Down who hit it big in 2001.

Nickelback might be the last worldwide rock  pop culture phenomenon?  Their 2nd album in 2001 sold 10 million worldwide, which is insane.  They're not a bad band, though i'm not a huge fan, but i think most people hate them because after they got big the struggling rock industry music a million different bands that sounded like them, so they kind of represent this huge bland commercialized "sellout" band.

The Killers hit big in 2004 (Hot Fuss), but really only had 1 good album (though Oasis only had 2 good albums).  The White Stripes hit big 2001-2003 (Seven Nation Army came out 2003).

Hmm.  Yes, I think that sounds good but you also need to consider how much subjectivity is in the 'impact' thing.

Well, ok but Radiohead had a lot of acclaim for 'in Rainbows' in 2007.

I feel that the hugeness of radiohead, and the way they're going out puts a vote in for them.  Less sure about The Darkness although they intrigue me.

This girl covers rock songs on her traditional Korean instrument, called a gayageum.  While I feel the word "epic" is overused, this is pretty close.

Intriguing - I will use that word again.  Has almost the gravity of a guitar but kind of a bouncy quality.
