Alaska hit by 7.0 quake.
« on: November 30, 2018, 01:18:49 pm »
I'm sure we've all heard/seen the news by now of what happened early this am near Anchorage. Just wondering if anybody out there has ever gone through one of these things.

Did a little research and found that the biggest ever recorded quake in the US was a 9.2 in roughly the same area. A tsunami followed and 131 people died. Apparently such events can be tough on railroad tracks.

I've been back and forth to California so many times that it is well over a year (perhaps closer to two) that I have spent there and not once did I see an earthquake. If there were tremors, they would be so minor to not be noticed with whatever else I was doing.

That said, I have recognized 3 earthquakes in Ontario of all places. Two in Toronto, and one in eastern Ontario. Luckily none of them caused any damage near me,
  • The first was way back in 1980, and centered around Cincinnati (magnitude 5.2). I was alone in my high-rise apartment on a quiet Sunday afternoon reading, and I could hear the doors in the building start to rattle which continued for a half minute or so. I didn't really connect it to an earthquake until I was listening to the news later that evening and the times matched.
  • The second was in 2010, and I was home working on the computer and could feel it. I immediately started combing the Internet and found it was centered in Quebec (magnitude 5.0).
  • The latest was in 2013, I was outside digging a foundation for a shed. This was harder to recognize, I began wondering if I had over exerted myself and the trembling was coming from my legs. I checked out the news later that evening, and yes another earthquake centered in Quebec. There were actually two recorded at 10 minutes apart (magnitude 5.2, and 4.1), but I only felt one (I assume the first).

I had just returned from time off and was rearranging my little hooch in Jalalabad when a 6.9 hit. It seemed to last a hell of a long time, probably 15 seconds in reality, but long enough that every GD bottle of water I had just finished shelving was now rolling around on the floor. My shack was OK but the new control tower just recently built had a few cracks in it.

Had a few good shakes when I was in Japan. Sure gets your heart rate up because you don't know what is coming next. Nothing like this though. Anchorage really got hammered in 64. The Tsunami did a lot of damage in Port Alberni on Vancouver Island. Anchorage is in a bad spot. I arrived there a few days after a Mt Spurr eruption covered the whole place in ash back in 92. They call it ash but it's more like ground glass.

I was sitting in my hotel room at the El Rancho in PaP Haiti when one hit there. That hotel sits on a steep valley and the back end is supported by cement pillars that (you know were built to the highest standards!) I had a vision of sliding down that valley so you can trust me I was traveling at high velocity when I went through the exit door. There were noticeable waves on the swimming pool. Thankfully the poolside bar wasn't seriously affected.

I felt a couple on Vancouver Island.  I was in Victoria for the 2001 Washington State quake.  Nothing like today's of course.

My first job was as a parts runner in the old CPA shops at YVR. There was a Puget sound earthquake. I was driving a fork lift at the time and didn't notice anything but when I looked up, all the lights which were suspended by cables, were swinging in unison.

I live in Winnipeg. I've felt big trucks drive by but that's about it. Although there was apparently a pretty good one in 1909 and a small one in western Manitoba in 2012.

That's just what I thought the Victoria one was.  Until I realised there were no roads nearby.  Initially that's just what it felt like.

I was in my kitchen in Victoria one time working toward a nice supper featuring one of the coho's I had brought home from a fishing trip to the Charlotte's. The chat with me and m'lady roamed around to her saying that this two story wood house we lived in shakes some times when there is a gust of wind. I was just bending down with my freshly whetted fillet knife when there was a shake. She said "see, I told you". I looked out the kitchen window and there wasn't enough wind to slightly rattle a leaf on the pear tree that sits right there. Turned on the news and found it was a 3 point something centered in Seattle that caused a few cans to fall off the shelves in grocery stores. So then she said "well what if we had a bigger quake up here". I said well then we would have a one story house and then as we get older we won't have to climb stairs to go to bed. It wasn't the first time she just shook her head. Luckily the salmon turned out good.

Just listening to some news from Alaska and the reporter claims they have had somewhere around 650 after shocks so far, and some in the neighborhood of 4.0. I would think that would be a little trying to say the least. "Do I repair the damage to my house just to have it reoccur?" And I think the worst would be when you're fast asleep at 3 am when another one of those shocks hits and you wake up wondering how big is this one gonna get.
