Coin/Banknote Collecting
« on: February 13, 2022, 02:18:56 am »
Anyone here collect coins or banknotes? I do both. Money is so much more interesting than stamps, imo. Either way it fits my quasi-nerdy personality.

Buying a sovereign or a gold eagle is on my bucket list. Better still, Krugerrands.

I wish I could show some pictures but I keep having trouble posting photos on here.

BTW: What's up with Canadian money lately? Taking your beloved, revered, dead politicians off of the money, and turning it vertical? SMH.

I sold my neighbour some winter tires from off my old vehicle last fall. He gave me $250 in cash. I'm beginning to think it will be collectable by the time I get around to spending it. I'm so used to paying for absolutely everything with plastic, I feel we are in the dying days of the cash system.

That's something I have often wondered about. Will paper and coins die? I hope not. And I don't think they will anyway. Cash is still useful. Some people like anonymous transactions, and there are poorer folks who are "underbanked" I believe it is called. You go into Baltimore and you see banks, but you also see a lot of "check cashing" places, which makes me believe the people there do everything with paper money and not debit cards; and that cash isn't necessarily going to die out for quite some time. People in this country illegally don't trust banks much or they're afraid of it giving their status away to the authorities.

I hope it doesn't die too soon. We need to redo most of our money; and the $20 is supposed to have Harriet Tubman in place of Andrew Jackson by 2030. I also wish they'd get rid of $1 bills once and for all. I dont' see cash disappearing in the US at least, however. What would strippers do, huh?

only vertical note is the $10:

but yes, (dead politician - revered or not), Sir John A Macdonald was on the prior $10 note; and a current process is underway to change out the $5 note (that has dead politician Sir Wilfred Laurier on it)... in this later regard, 8 candidates have been 'shortlisted' to appear on the new replacement $5 (4 of the 8 are indigenous persons... so, do the math!)

I have a bunch of old money everywhere - pre Euro Italian, French and German... Dutch money.

I wish I could just hand it to somebody for 10% of the value.

Really? Those are exactly the kinds of paper currency I curse myself for forgetting to save. I've travelled to Portugal, then Italy, then France/Belgium/Netherlands and while I have a crap-ton of coins, I forgot to save any of the paper.

I take if you're not interested in paper money collection if you want to get rid of it, lol.
