That was quick....

It's a little weird, isn't it, that people with apprenticeship programs actually earned LESS than those with just high school?

Not really. Just high school includes a lot of older people who are nearing retirement and didn’t need postsecondary education for a career, so they have the benefit of accumulated wage increases. Apprentices are mostly young adults learning, ie, at the beginning of their earning potential.

Interesting world we live in in. If you employ someone and pay them, you have to pay at least minimum wage. If you employ them and pay nothing, that's OK.

Depends what you’re comparing. Compare to high school only, university degree holders earn substantially more. Compare to all college and trades programs, the margin is smaller but still quite a bit more. This is available info from the census, I think. I could try to hunt it down, if I wasn’t so lazy.

Agreed but there is a huge discrepancy between degrees. There are lots of useless degrees and a lot that provide excellent earning potential. The latter I’m sure skew the numbers for ‘university graduates’.

Personally I would never encourage my kids to go to university unless they’re taking a vocational degree.

In the United States, unpaid internships are rampant.

Not just the US.  In Canada, Bell Communications was abusing unpaid internships until it turned into a PR disaster for them.  I doubt Bell is alone in the matter.

https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2014/08/12/bell_canada_cancels_massive_unpaidinternship_program.html

Bell promoted the program as an opportunity to gain valuable experience for management careers, but the truth is that the interns were exploited as menial labor doing things like customer surveys and data entry.  Putting up with this bullshit for just a chance to get a toe in that door. This is how desperate people have become.

And the kicker is that studies have found that people who do unpaid internships don't actually have an edge in getting paid employment in the future anyway.

The well-off have been enriching themselves by exploiting the labour of the working classes for centuries. The form changes with historical shifts, but the function stays the same. Most of the time it's not intentional. You're born into your position and benefit from it without even recognizing the exploitation taking place. Even those being exploited don't tend to recognize it because the exploited aren't the ones controlling the national narratives about their exploitation. They tend to buy into the ideology that they need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps. However, if hard work was all you needed to be rich (as opposed to opportunity....which often comes as a result of heritage), I know people working in auto factories in Windsor and Detroit who should be worth many times more than Donald Trump.
