I work a modified schedule of 9 work days over two weeks.  That, with stat holidays and three vacation days, gave me a four day week for nearly four months over the summer.  It was nice.  :)

"How was your long weekend?"
"It was okay. I went kayaking on Saturday, and hiking on Monday."
"The correct answer was: 'Not long enough!' HA! HA!"

Spending one day per week less with Old Economy Steve would be a big plus for me.

I believe in shorter work weeks as you get older.

I'm thinking of using part of my holiday and personal days next summer to just work 4 days/week.  Next year I get bumped up to 4 weeks, instead of 3 weeks/year.

Is Alberta the only province who is still just giving 2 weeks/year at a job?  I negotiated for the extra week when I started here.

I am assuming it's 2 in BC as well... I got 2 weeks when I started my current job.  I get 3 weeks when I have been with them for 5 years.

Yes, two weeks minimum for full time employees in BC.  My last private sector job offered three weeks from the start, and a flex day every two weeks.  I have been lucky in my employers.  :)

When I worked in Germany in the 80's, there was a 6 week vacation for everyone - period. That is a big part of the reason their economy booms.

i don't like having less time in the evenings if i have to work more in the day.  But i do like the extra day.  Weren't machines in the 19th century supposed to work for us anyways and free up our time?

It's funny how our standard of living keeps rising but we still want more.  I wonder how early most people could retire if they lived mostly like healthy people did in 1900.  But I guess we kinda need a car.

Because of the low productivity ?

Actually I have known people who worked in Europe and say that there is very little wasted time at work.  It makes sense that they have to use peoples' time wisely.

That was my experience as well. Treating the employees well pays dividends.

It's pretty normal in European countries to have lots of vacation time.   The previous company I worked for had a head office in Norway, and everyone had six weeks, usually taken over the summer.  When people came over to work in Canada they were less than impressed with our work/life balance.

Productivity in NA hasn't made the workers richer. That's for damn sure. **** productivity.

Not much but better than the US. No requirement for paid time off at all in the US of A.

Minimum time off by country:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_minimum_annual_leave_by_country

Some provinces in Canada do OK...  others suck.   Canada should switch to a mandatory time off for employees regardless of how long they've worked at a company.  Right now, it acts as incentive to have high employee turnover if they gain vacation the longer they work at a place.

Norway's time off is often inflated by people...  not sure why.

Americans are crazy.
