Let the Right One In (2008) and Let Me In (2010) are the perfect examples of how Hollywood can mess things up. The former is the original created in Sweden. It had tense storytelling and a really creative plot, especially considering the love for the Twilight books at the time. It was both touching and terrifying. The Americanized version of the movie stuck mostly to the plot of the original, but introduced quite a bit of computer-generated effects that I feel took away from the film. John Carpenter is known for his horror being so over the top that it becomes dark comedy. The CG made what was an otherwise interesting story too over the top. More action is not always better, but I guess it helps if your audience has a short attention span.
