1 million dollars culture
« on: July 09, 2021, 01:27:13 am »
Remember when 1 million dollars was a lot?  Like you were rich?  You were a millionaire!

Now if you have 1 million dollars well congrats you can finally afford to buy a detached house in the suburbs.

If you had six, you could build a man.

In the sixties a Rolls Silver Cloud cost 15K and a nice detached house in Vancouver was 20K.

Yes, I remember the 80's where Brewster's Millions seemed impossible and Barenaked Ladies sang "If I had a Million Dollars".

It's not inflation either, 1 million in 1985 = 2.15 million today.  It's purchasing power that's gone down, especially given today's housing market.

In the early 90s, I bought an entire house in Prince Rupert for $50,000.00 and a Firefly for $10,000.00 iirc.  The house was in bad shape when I bought it, but before we got it fixed up, we split up and I sold it for the same $50,000.00 - so at least I didn't lose money on it.

I bought my current place in Surrey (a two-bedroom or one-bedroom/den) for under  $200,000.00 in 2010.  A unit with the same floorplan in this complex just sold for $500,000.00.  I took some money out of my equity for renos, but if the prices hold then I'll have money to retire to Salmon Arm in a couple of years.   Even if the market drops precipitously, I'm very unlikely to ever be underwater on this mortgage and would be able to stay even after I retire if it's cheaper than moving to Salmon Arm.  Feeling blessed because I know not everyone is as fortunate.

(A Firefly was a small, fuel efficient car, in case anyone is wondering.  We and my +6' guy went tent camping in it one year in Northern BC. Carried us and all our gear on gravel roads.  It did fine, great little car).

In 72 we drove one of these down the coast road from Vancouver to LA and back. Same colour and everything. I'm 6'1" but was lighter and a lot more flexible back then.

Back in 68 a Cooper S would set you back just over $2700 which made it quite expensive next to something like a Beetle but a lot more fun.

That sounds like a fun trip!

It was. I had a fairly loud Abarth exhaust on it. The thing was geared to go, top speed, peak power and the red line all came up within about 200 RPM of each other and it was turning around 4000 RPM at 100 kph. No overdrive. Freeway driving wasn't very pleasant but when the road got twisty it was a blast. I had some Speedwell parts that dropped the steering column and tilted the seat and moved it back a bit to suit my frame better.

Dia's Firefly brought back memories because they are a similar size and we went camping with the Mini as well, but nothing as ambitious as Northern BC. We moteled it to California.

Is it sad statement of our times that you feel this way?  As far as I know you're not a young man in his 20's.

I would think that people living with their parents into their 30's and even 40's (i'm not saying MH you did this) is not good for the housing industry, it means people aren't moving out and buying homes.  So developers are making a killing on profit per home, but they aren't selling as many homes as they could be if they were more affordable.

I guess they'd prefer to build and sell fewer and sell them for higher per home.

I think the banks have a lot of power in this country, as do real estate developers.  I think they keep our corruption VERY well hidden in this country, as do our politicians.
