Voting in Canada
« on: October 29, 2022, 12:43:40 pm »
A Canadian I talked to was saying that general election ballots in Canada are not only counted by hand, but within a couple of hours after the polls close. Impressive.

Do Canadian general elections only have one thing on the ballot? Or do you cram other things on it, like a provincial election, or provincial or local referenda, and other such stuff? I was assuming it is the former, as Americans probably have multiple contests on our ballots due to the fact that we are (in my opinion) lazy voters. ("You mean I have to vote again? I just did that s*** last year!")

Municipal, provincial and federal elections are always separate, but municipally you will find mayor, councillor and often school trustees all on the same ballot.

So---hypothetically---a Canadian voter could end up voting on several different election days within a short space of time, if they nearly coincided? (Like Monday there's a federal election, next Tuesday there's a provincial one, and the beginning of next month is municipal?)

BTW, what are provinces divided into?

Municipal is every four years in October on a schedule. Federally and provincially, elections can happen whenever the House decides so they could certainly happen at the same time. I think there was a brief overlap of campaigns in Manitoba a few years ago when there was an unexpected federal election (which is most likely to happen with a minority government).
Usually they stagger them to avoid confusion and to manage election resources.

So more than one contest/race/whatever on the same piece of paper can never, ever happen?

No, they're totally separate.

Sometimes there will be a referendum on the same ballot but it is rare.
