Whether he was inspired by ISIS or his inability to get laid, this is the new face of terrorism. People don't need to be connected to Islamic fundamentalism to perform acts of terror in the West.

This is just the price of freedom at this point. I recognize that's the line gun advocates use when someone shoots up a school, but you really can't put strict restrictions on rental vans. They're $20 a day to get.

They require a drivers license. I wonder if there are any red flags in this losers past?

They don't do background checks to take a Road Test.

Terrorism has a specific meaning, its not defined by an act but by the motivation for the act.   Mowing people over because your GF dumped you isn't terrorism.

Drivers licenses can be revoked.

Blowing up a Yeti cooler is clearly politically motivated act of terror

Drivers licenses can be revoked.

So then we get into the Big Brotherish territory about what "speech" gets you barred from accessing government programs and privileges.

Intelligence agencies can monitor for dangerous speech, but you can't just be revoking licences for that. And there's an easy work around, get someone else to rent the Truck, or steal it!

I wonder if these can be tied to media ?  Desire for notoriety is #3 on the list here and they only have measured these since the age of TV.

I agree... you can't protect people from every conceivable threat, and there's a point at which trying to protect people becomes a bigger threat than what you're trying to protect them from.  I think trying to restrict vehicle rentals on the minuscule chance that somebody might be planning a vehicle attack on pedestrians is an example of such a situation.

Focusing on identifying potentially dangerous individuals makes more sense to me than trying to eliminate every possible means of attack.

Unfortunately, in this case it probably wouldn't have helped.  In the case of this individual, interviews with people who've known him had no indication that he had any interest in violence at all.    It sounds like he may have had Asperger's, but that's certainly no red flag for violence.

A lot of the comments on social media are blaming Muslims\immigrants\Trudeau.  I am sure that regardless of this individuals motivation, there will soon be claims of coverups due to political correctness and "scared to offend Brown people".

It was nice to see this bit, but of course any "good" from Muslims or Muslim organizations will be ignored by a segment of the population in favor of spreading fear and hatred.

A Muslim-Canadian non-profit group called DawaNet, which helped raise more than $800,000 for the victims and their families of last year’s mosque shooting in Quebec, has launched a GoFundMe page for the victims of the Toronto incident. It had raised more than $9,000 by early Tuesday.

So it's a Men's Right thing. There's a poster at the other place with a name of just characters that seems to be big into Men's Rights.  :-\

Kudos to the cop that made the arrest. It certainly looked like the driver wanted to commit death by cop but the officer kept cool enough to determine the perp had no weapon and simply handcuffed him and took him downtown. At least that way they get to question him and find out if this is just a crazy one off or if there is a wider connection.

Looks like maybe this guy was angry because he was having trouble getting laid.

"In a YouTube video Rodger posted before his arrest, he described himself as a virgin who wanted to exact revenge on women."
