I am quite familiar with the changes, I have filed for every period since inception and know the calculations they use.

I'm critical of using revenue reduction *as a method*.  It doesn't make sense to just give free money to companies whether or not COVID has impacted them.

Yeah how do you go about proving that revenue loss was COVID related?  Lots of small businesses fail, lots of big businesses have bad years or bad quarters.

But the whole point of this program was to keep workers working because if they were laid off the government would be paying them on the CERB anyways for doing nothing, so better they be paid to work.

The whole thing is a sh!t-show, there's going to be abuse it's inevitable, and does the gov really have the resources to find it?  Tax returns themselves sound like a ton of work on CRA's part this year.  And how long would it take the Auditor General to audit half a trillion+ in program spending?

In the Trudeau gov's defense, they were stuck between a rock and a hard place.  Then again, a few of the most senior finance people in our gov resigned this year like Morneau and leaders at the Bank of Canada.

The alternative, I think, of letting businesses fail en mass, with mass layoffs, was far worse.
Like taking a laissez faire approach to COVID and just letting nature take its course.  I'm surprised Extinction Rebellion doesn't have a conservative wing advising that. It's been pointed out before that most of the planet's other inhabitants would raise a collective cheer if human beings disappeared from the scene.

As bad an appointment as this was, and it was bad, we are still suffering with the legacy of Harper appointments.

Mike Duffy is STILL a fuckin’ Senator.

Lynn Beyak, who the Senate can’t seem to get their **** together to remove from office....   maybe because they don’t like to actually work?....    One of the most awful and stupid human beings in all of Canada is an appointee of Harper’s.

At least we were rid of the GG in relatively quick fashion.

Bayak just resigned.

Cancel culture is out of control, you can't even be a horrible public racist without people demanding you give up you seat in the Upper chamber.

She wasn’t forced to go anywhere....  they never made her leave, or held her to account.   She resigned with all the honours and $$$ that go with the position.

She essentially said “there’s a place for racists like me in the Government of Canada”, giving most of Canada the middle finger while doing so.  And, sadly, I guess she was right.

In December, Sen. Mary Jane McCallum advanced a motion seeking a Senate first: having Beyak permanently removed. The motion was tabled but had not yet been debated before the Senate adjourned for the holidays and they were going to discuss it next week.

She’s been a problem for years.

If this was a victory, whoop-dee-fuckin-doo.

I prefer not to be governed by racists while they dither and humm and haw about what to do.

If the Senate wants credibility they have to earn it by policing their own membership. To paraphrase an old saying, who would want to belong to a club  that had Beyak as a member

Senators barely do anything, they'll never have much credibility.  It's really just a big elitist circle-jerk club they get to do on the government dime after a career of licking the balls of some party/PM and getting rewarded with a cushy job for it.

Senators get a pension after 6 years.  They probably get more pension money after 8 years, which is probably why Beyak decided to retire effective Jan 25th, where she would have served exactly 8 years to the day.

It's hard to abolish the Senate because it takes constitutional amendment.  What they could do is remove or cut the pensions and decrease their salary to reflect a public servant who works 3 days a week with summers and a healthy Xmas period off.

They do a lot of committee work but whether government pays any attention to it is another question. There are hard working senators who take the job seriously and there are those who are just along for the ride. We need to find a way of selecting better people and making them more accountable. I'm not in favour of getting rid of things like the Senate and GG. There needs to be some sort of check on parliament and government other than just the Supreme Court.

The good part is that the reforms, such as they are, that JT has put in place have at least created better senators, imo.

While Harper’s appointments just prior have been some of the absolutely worst.

They need to go further with the accountability aspects.  I don’t mind pay and pensions if they are actually useful.

The GG should absolutely NOT be a check on Parliament, as that could go either way.  I like the idea of having the Chief Justice of the SC do that job.

The Chief Justice's job is to be the Chief Justice. A GG firing a PM would cause a constitutional crisis but the threat needs to be there and why people chosen for that position should have extensive knowledge of the constitution as a primary qualification.

No reason the Chief Justice can’t branch out to do those duties as well.

When was the last GG who had “extensive knowledge of the Constitution” to be selected for the position?  (Maybe Johnston, being a law professor....  but he didn’t specialize in that at all)

But that just bolsters my argument for the Chief Justice to do it.

Because they have a very important constitutional role. A GG's daily role should be the same as the Queen's, to provide non partisan, advice, council and warning. PM's should be taking advantage of that resource. They also free up Prime Ministers from ceremonial and PR duties that are required of heads of state.

Judging from many past GGs, a trained money could do it...
