Looking at the actual data, the peacock’s government (maybe thanks to whomever he is getting economic advice from) has a lower unemployment rate than Harper did....  and this is WITH the ongoing turmoil in the Alberta resource sector putting pressure on the unemployment rate the wrong way.

Obama and Trudeau were handed disasters and... they LISTENED

Yes.  He has done some things well.  The economy was doing well, despite folks like Graham denying the data.

Other things, I think he has been a disaster.

If we’re talking about the fact that he’s a “peacock”, I think that has actually helped him represent Canada in a good way on the world stage.

The US economy has far more influence on Canada's economy than our PM does.  If you blame Harper then you have to blame Obama.  If you give credit to Trudeau then you have to give credit to Trump.  A PM doesn't create recessions or bull markets, they can only gently guide the economy unless they do something truly extreme which they never do.  There's only so much that stimulus spending and taxes can do.  The vast majority of economic activity comes from the private sector.

All your graph says is that the US economy and thus the Canadian economy has recovered steadily since 2008 and then COVID happened, both of which had nothing to do with any PM.  Our PM's didn't cause the global price of oil to burst either.

No, it clearly does not have mechanisms as she is still there.  Mike Duffy is still a Senator.   What are these mechanisms you speak of?

They have never tried. No senator has ever been expelled but legal opinions say the Constitution gives the same powers as the UK Commons which can expel members. Maybe they should give it a try sometime and see what happens. It might get them some credibility.

Thanks for the heads up.

No accountability, just saying that she had been vetted but they would looking at a better vetting process even though he already had one which he didn't use. This after a reporter said to him it only took a few minutes for her to find out Payette had a history of this kind of behaviour in other positions. No apologies or concern for the many who suffered under Payette's abuse. It was pretty bad.

Canada now has the largest deficit on planet earth:  https://financialpost.com/opinion/jack-m-mintz-in-government-spending-and-deficits-were-now-no-1-in-the-world

I wouldn't expect any different from Financial Post, but funny how they discuss CERB but conveniently leave out CEWS.

So many profitable companies were subsidized with shareholders taking home big dividends while businesses with little in terms of labour costs went under.  The criteria for qualifying was a joke.

I can't stand to even look at JT any more because of it.

Please explain to us how 57% GDP spending by all levels of gov’t is bad in Canada, but 53% by Germany is OK.

What level would you think is the acceptable level?  Why?

My favourite companies with this are the airlines. They complain that they weren't bailed out, yet they tap into hundreds of millions of CEWS support.

And to be fair to the prime minister - I doubt he was involved in setting the criteria. Early on, the civil services needed a simple on/off switch for all programs. They didn't have the ability to sift through minutia. As time went on, the service had more capability, and the criteria have changed to be more discerning.

I am confident that there are many profitable companies that will end up paying money back. On the other hand, many companies that were profitable but had reduced sales would have undoubtedly remained profitable but laid off many workers to do so without CEWS. It's complicated.

And Jack Mintz. lol.

Canada is about the only country that hasn't given its airlines bailouts yet because of our size and small population we are more dependent on air travel than the great majority of countries. Last spring major US carriers, American, Delta, United etc got over 4 billion USD plus low interest loans. Southwest got 3.2 billion plus loans. Lufthansa got 9 billion Euros. Air France/KLM got 10 billion Euros. Other European carriers also got government assistance. Alitalia was re nationalized. Who knows how much some of them have received since last spring. Other countries are insuring they will still have their own carriers when this is over.

There's something else they always leave out whenever they invoke the old national debt nightmare.

From the article;
Quote
Doling out money may be a politician’s dream, but it will be a nightmare for our children and grandchildren when the bill comes due.

They never fail to neglect mentioning that we're also leaving behind a planet with an increasingly unpleasant and inhospitable environment that's pretty much exhausted of the natural capital future generations will require to pay our debt....never mind their own bills.

Neither Air Canada, nor Westjet, are anywhere close to default.

Also, the ideal that, even if the current carriers went bankrupt (very unlikely), someone would not step in and take over is laughable.
