There are a lot more businesses in BC besides selling houses. They have generally done well even while reducing CO2 emissions while at the same time returning the taxes to taxpayers in the form of provincial income tax reductions.
That stopped in 2013/14. In the latest budget the NDP got rid of the law entirely that required the carbon tax to be returned in the form of other tax cuts. It just goes into the big pot now. The same will happen with all the carbon taxes, including Justin’s.
There is really no link between carbon taxes and reduced emissions, people and business are now taking climate change seriously and doing things on their own. Car dealers can’t keep up with demand for EV’s. Tesla is the top seller and almost all of them are too expensive to qualify for rebates. The US is reducing emissions at a greater rate than we are without carbon taxes.
Vancouver now has the most expensive fuel in North America with 54 cents a litre in taxes. Many industries have no other options like transport, marine and aviation. That will drag on the economy eventually.
