Economic conditions made it unlikely the mine would have been built any time soon, if ever.

JT and the Sunshine Band must be incredibly relieved right now, because this saves them from a decision that would have upset a large number of people regardless of what they decided.

Pulling out at this point in time seems like an odd choice.  Last week the Teck CEO had said something to the effect that they'd come this far so intended to see it through.  Even yesterday afternoon, there were ongoing negotiations with the Chipewyan first nation; agreements were reached regarding caribou territory, I believe.  It's hard to imagine why they were still working on it yesterday afternoon, only to pull out just a few hours later. What changed in the space of a few hours?

There are human beings who were desperately hoping for any good news, so try not to celebrate too hard. It won't be well received.

Bye bye!

almost as gleeful as your 'it's easy to shutdown Canada' line... almost!

of course, asswipeKenney has chimed in to blame this all on PM Trudeau... for, I kid you not, how the rail blockades were handled!
Quote
Alberta Premier Jason Kenney described Teck's announcement as a grave disappointment for Albertans, but said it didn't come as a surprise.

"It is what happens when governments lack the courage to defend the interests of Canadians in the face of a militant minority," Kenney said in an emailed statement, pointing to what he described as weeks of federal indecision on blockades in solidarity with those opposed to a natural gas pipeline proposed by Coastal GasLink in northern B.C.

just 3 weeks ago: the Teck CEO Don Lindsay had been all over the map with "excuses" for why Teck clearly wasn't intending to proceed ANYWAY - his 3P pronouncement - pipelines, partners and oil prices!

Quote from: Teck CEO, Don Lindsay
We’ve told the government for it to be developed, we need 3 Ps. The first is the (Trans Mountain) pipeline has to be finished, not just started, finished.

We need a partner. We need price. So we will just wait to see how that unfolds.

the Teck statement from CEO Lindsay states that, "customers want policies that reconcile resource development and climate change — something he said the region has yet to achieve".  "The region"... hey justVisitingJason, is that a Teck dig at Alberta... at you? Cause Kenney, your government hasn't provided supporting information in regards the project's related emissions - and most pointedly, you have yet to reaffirm and deploy the tarsands emissions cap as previously negotiated between the prior Notley NDP and the federal Liberal governments.

I make no apologies for being opposed to fossil fuel production. In fact, I am very opposed to any continuing federal subsidies for the fossil fuel industries, because those subsidies are the only thing  propping up profitability. Without the subsidies, investments would  have already tipped to rollout of   renewable energy.

The energy market is not a 'free market'. Oil is on welfare.

of course there have to be trade-offs... as much as you hyperbolic Greenies can't fathom, there is a 30 year time-frame needed to wean-off the fossil-fuel teet! As a part of reasoned planning (all towards net-zero), the federal Liberal government had negotiated tarsands expansion conditions with the prior Alberta NDP government - see Alberta's Climate Leadership Plan that includes a cap on related tarsands emissions. The plan/cap that Jason Kenney refuses to implement!

There is no 30 year window.
There is no Teck, there will be no TC LNG, there will be no TMX.
Those federal subsidies need to shift to renewable energy.

If you take what fossil fuels contribute out of the economy, where is that subsidy money supposed to come from?

geezaz! For as much as you have touted the Green Party's plans, are you now claiming the Green Party policy doesn't include net-zero by 2050? Wait, let me call my crew in to do the math: 2020 from 2050 is... how much guys - how much? What's that you say; what's that? 30 years you say?

member Granny, you're such a lightweight, the waldo can't given you any more attention/time right now!  ;D

Energy demand and revenues won't go down. They'll just be replaced by renewable energy.

It could well come from the sale of clean energy as it does now from the sale of energy from fossils. Also from the ever increasing numbers of people working in the renewable energy industry. I know I would rather breath fresh air working outside on a wind farm than in a hole in the ground sucking in coal dust.

So get on that Granny, you don't need to be an oil producer to develop renewable energy, so all those provinces receiving equalization better get off their asses and start pulling their weight.

The feds better get fossil fuels off welfare.
The energy market needs to be a free market.
The rest of us are pulling our weight in renewables, while still also paying for subsidies for Alberta/Sask fossil fuel production.

Pull the fossil fuel subsidies.
Free the energy market.
That is all that is necessary.

If you are pulling your weight in renewables, why do we have equalization subsidized by the energy industry in this country? Holier than thou BC still gets over 70% of its energy from fossil fuels as well as exporting more coal than any part of North America.

The energy industry gets tax breaks not subsidies and in so doing sends a handsome return to Ottawa. The movie industry in BC and Ontario also get handsome tax breaks as do other industries.

I know this is old but I will keep pounding away until you understand. Alberta sends 20 billion in net tax revenues to Ottawa every year. That money is already spent plus we are borrowing another 26 billion this year. The trouble with you is your thinking goes no farther than killing the oil industry, you have no clue how  to replace it other than blind faith. If you just kill the industry without developing new ones in parallel to replace it, you won't have money to subsidize anything and you will have to cut over 20 billion from government spending just to stay where we are now.

Those federal subsidies need to shift to renewable energy.

Federal and provincial tax money generated from Canada's fossil fuel industries pays for a lot towards government services for every Canadian, including the poor and groups like aboriginals.  Be careful what you wish for.

Renewable energy also has a ton of government incentives (tax rebates etc).  The federal carbon tax also acts like a green subsidy, and it makes gas at a lot of pumps more expensive.  There's $5000 rebate if you buy an electric car, and so on.

At what cost?  Show me the numbers.  What's the cost/benefit analysis?

How do you know revenues won't go down?  Where's your evidence?  You're filled with wishful thinking and zero facts.
