What a bloody idiot.  An embarrassment to the country.

I agree, but I'm sure the cost of losing gas tax dollars for such tiny population small province would be a hit.  But why tax EVs?  Just raise gas taxes more or tax something else.  How many EVs are saskatchewan's going to buy anyways?  Like 2?

EV’s are using the same infrastructure as other vehicles. That tax revenue has to be replaced somehow. Just increasing fuel taxes increases the cost of everything whether you drive a vehicle or not.

In BC our carbon tax just gets dumped into general revenue, the NDP got rid of the law that required offsetting tax reductions in their first budget in 2017. The feds will do the same eventually.

So would taxing EVs.

So would taxing EVs.

Almost everything you consume isn't delivered in EV's, it is delivered via diesel. Different levels of government collect over 30 billion in fuel taxes every year. That revenue will have to be replaced somehow. If people aren't paying fuel taxes, the only equitable way to do it is taxing those people on the number of KM driven.

These are all political exercises in trying to sell a new tax. It is headed for general revenue anyway so there is no reason the get excited about any of their sales pitches.

$150 a year EV tax in leu of fuel taxes is dirt cheap. If your car has a 50L tank and you live in metro Vancouver, $150 is the amount of tax you would pay on 5 tank fulls.

Where is government going to get all that money if everyones drives EV's?

Interesting consequence of Covid. People buying cars like crazy and abandoning public transit. Traffic, gas consumption and CO2 emissions hitting new highs.

Pandemics  don’t have very many positive effects.   That shouldn’t really be news to anyone...

OTOH and while speaking of cars, covid and positive effects I got a cheque from ICBC recently. Because of fewer cars and collisions on the road during covid.

Clearly a short-lived benefit given what's coming. More collisions and higher premiums.

I got that too. Given ICBC was in financial crisis not very long ago, I feel like they should have just hung onto the money because they'll probably need it soon.

I'm fine with the idea of a carbon tax, but they shouldn't give rebates.   The whole point is to give financial incentive to change your behavior, and if you give the money back anyway, what's the incentive?  Give people incentives to buy an EV. Give people incentives to stop driving inefficient vehicles.  Don't give people their carbon tax money back.

BC's just goes into general revenue so you don't have to worry about rebates.

The problem with BC is that it just goes into general revenue to be spent as the government chooses. There is no requirement to keep track of it and use it for CO2 reducing  initiatives. It's just another tax.

The 'incentive' is that not everyone gets a rebate equal to the amount that they pay in carbon taxes.

Lets say there are 2 people, X and Y. Both are in the same tax bracket and get rebates of $100.

Person X drives a hummer, and lives in a mansion with no insulation, and as a result pays a carbon tax of $150. Net result: He is out of pocket $50 (despite him getting a rebate).

Person Y drives a prius. He lives in a small, energy-efficient home, and as a result paid $50 in carbon taxes. Even though he got the same rebate as person X, at the end of the day he gets an extra $50 in his pocket that he didn't have before (and a whole $100 more than person X.)
