Apparently, the Conservative Party and their leadership have turned a blind eye to sexual assault by one of their MPs.

Quote
During debate on legislation to curb abuse on the Hill and in federally regulated work forces, Conservative MP Michelle Rempel said senior officials in her party "should be ashamed of themselves" over the handling of allegations that Rick Dykstra sexually assaulted a young Conservative staffer in 2014, when he was an MP.

I really hope that this turns into an opportunity to engage in a collective effort.

There's nothing political about this moment, we are all affected.

It’s political because one particular political party, not exactly known for progressive ideas about women’s issues, elected a guy as president of the party who they knew sexually assaulted someone.

In Squid's world, accusations are all that's needed. No trial is necessary. No defense is allowed. No need to even talk to or listen to the defendant. Pronounce guilt and sentence and move on to the next guilty party.

All that due process stuff just gets in the way anyway.

Andrew Scheer is now launching an investigation into the allegations. Only what, going on 4 years after the fact!

Where did I say the allegations were true?
Maybe you should tell that to Michelle Rempel....  She’s the one who said how her party is handling it is “disgusting”....   and she didn’t mean that she was siding with the “accused”.   I’m pretty sure Conservatives are the ones bringing this up, not me!   Nice try at deflection.

Maybe in your world, if you get away with a sexual assault, then there shouldn’t be any consequences and you can be president of the Conservative Party.

Okay. You seem confused. If you're not saying he's guilty then why are you bitching about him 'getting away with sexual assault'?

People in the Conservative Party are saying the handling of it is “disgusting”...     if it’s an open question as to whether he is guilty or not, go tell them.

In the meantime, members of the party covered it up and he was elected as party president...

But don’t worry....   nothing to see here....   fake news...    ::)

A member is complaining. I wonder how much she actually knows.

Covered what up? That he was accused but not found guilty of anything? If someone 'accuses' you of being a rapist but you're not actually charged or convicted, should we publicize that everywhere and make sure you never get elected to any kind of office because of what a scumbag you... might be?

Covered up sexual assault allegations so they couldn’t be investigated.

geezaz, this thread is still going? When I read "Superstar" in the title reference to Rempel, I thought it was a joke thread! But then again, perhaps she's moved on from those heady days of her strategic 'potted plant' HOC party placement behind Harper, moved on from all those HOC camera captures of her boredom/ 'tweeting', moved on from her nothing contributions within the Harper Environment ministry, moved on from her self-describing as a '35-year old chick' days, moved on from her Fox News "Terrorist Payout" interview special, moved on from the cynical roots of her manufactured outrage over the removal of FGM from the citizenship guide, etc., etc., etc..

perhaps Ms. Rempel should direct some of her expressed "disgust" towards former PM Stephen Harper... as, apparently, Harper knew about the allegations against Dykstra, MP for the Ontario Harper Conservative riding of St. Catharines from 2006 to 2015, for years and did nothing about it/them.

I'm confused about just what you expect them to have done. The police already investigated and dropped it. Are you suggesting that if you know about allegations against someone, then even if you have no evidence you should broadcast them to the world in order to vilify that person?

Many people believe that the justice system is failing, so the reaction is "I believe victims", or a kind of group/mob justice.  Since the end goal of the system is acceptance of its authority, this phenomenon has to be considered as a reaction to the failure to meet its goals.

Obviously, it's problematic but there are other examples of government systems that face rejection, and reform has to happen.  Cannabis prohibition, tax revolts, are some examples that come to mind.

Here's a very interesting look at the event and the Conservative Party's internal fight over whether Dykstra should have been removed as a candidate.

http://www.macleans.ca/politics/ottawa/inside-the-explosive-conservative-party-fight-over-rick-dykstra/

Harper's position at the time was that he did not believe a candidate should be removed over a case that was investigated and closed without charges being laid.

Campaign manager Jenni Byrne felt that the bar ought to be set a little higher than "no charges were laid".

In this email exchange, a couple of campaign staffers make clear that their biggest priority is getting on record that they don't know anything about the incident:

Quote
Minutes later, Novak replied: “I will just note, on the assumption this exchange is likely to come to light in a discovery process should the matter go to court, that I have no such knowledge. I am aware of allegations, I have never met the complainant, and I am assured that those who did interact with her at the time urged her to take the matter to authorities.”

Giorno agreed with Novak: “This is correct. I am aware of no evidence either. However, I do think there is a case for Arthur or other counsel to be asked to review and report on the matter,” he said, referring to Arthur Hamilton, the Conservative Party lawyer.

Byrne replied: “Great—you guys are protected legally. That makes everything better. Sleep well at night. Cheers/Jenni.”

Ultimately it turns out that the complainant asked the RCMP to stop pursuing the complaint out of fear for her privacy and her career.  So "no charges were laid" is really not a vindication of Dykstra at all.
