Religious Culture

I’m sorry For the strong language.... And if your religious sensibilities are pained by my comment, too bad.   But fuk your religion and it’s silly superstitions.

The prime minister says the RCMP's policy requiring front-line officers to wear properly fitting N95 respirator masks amounts to discrimination and "shouldn't have happened," because the rule disfavours officers who keep beards for religious reasons.

Masks keep people safe.  Praying under your holy beard does not.  The choice is a very simple one.  Public health should Trump religious superstition.

Apparently you don't have the right not to be breathed on by someone with a beard and no mask.

I'm a strong advocate for religious rights, but this endangers others.

I agree with the OP.

Your religious beliefs don't allow you to put the lives of others at risk.  Put the mask on and shave your beard or stay at home and do paperwork.

Yeah, I agree - your religion doesn't give you the right to endanger others.  I'm interested to see what the court decides, since public safety is a pretty important principle as well.

Is it going to court? So far it is just some politicians trying to score points.

Maybe I'm wrong, my partner was talking about this yesterday and I thought that they'd filed a case or something.

With JR and MH on board, I think this thread can die of natural causes.

Haha .... not sure if this is a compliment on my extreme reasonableness, or a comment on my overzealous support of minority religions.  ;)

time for some waldo correction/clarity!

- failed/lacking OP
- RCMP policy: requires front-line officers to wear properly fitting N95 respirator masks
- reason for RCMP policy: under current legislation, the RCMP is bound by the Canada Labour Code and Canada Occupational Health and Safety Regulations - regulation that requires a clean-shaven face for proper fitting/use of N95 masks

Quote from: Cpl. Caroline Duval - RCMP National Communications Services spokesperson
Under current legislation, the force does not have the authority to change the rules around personal protective equipment (PPE). Unfortunately, there is presently no evidence of a safe and proven alternative to the currently approved PPE that meets the unique uncontrolled setting in which our front-line members operate and that adheres to occupational health and safety regulations.

The White Rock Pride Society has a human rights case upcoming against a local Catholic parish that refused to rent them hall space due to bigotry informed by their religion.

Good news:  The Canadian Secular Alliance has received intervenor status (along with 4 other groups) in the case.

Should be an interesting case.  Hopefully religion will no longer be allowed to be used as an excuse for bigotry.

I think that religions renting rooms to people is a side hustle, and as such subjected to secular law.

The case law angle isn't significant, as far as I can see.  Out of curiosity - do you think that they should have to rent to anyone?  Neo Nazis?  KKK? A sex party? NAMBLA?

And of course they are still allowed to dictate how people can behave in their community.

It hasn’t been subject to them yet.

None of those are protected classes under the Charter.

Can they?  Not as much as they’d like.   Trinity Western was forced to drop their ridiculous covenant about heterosexual sex after marriage.  This was before they were sued for human rights violations.  They saw the gating on the wall….  They weren’t going to be able to be as sexist or homophobic as they wanted to be soon.

1. It will be soon, though.
2. Very true.
3. Yes but part of the problem stems from religious institutions beyond secondary school.  I don't believe religious universities or hospitals are needed anymore.  They can nod to their heritage (Mt. Sinai in Toronto has a Sabbath elevator) but not enforce exclusionary policies.

We seem to be on the same page here, surprisingly.

1 - imagine all the money churches can now make by hosting gay wedding receptions.

3 - Places like Trinity Western are literally run by religious groups.  So are some hospitals.  The Catholic hospital in Nova Scotia was told by the courts that they must provide assisted dying.
