How does Premier Kenny, a failed philosophy major who's only job was as a paid lobbiest, claim to be an expert on how to fight climate change.

A premier doesn’t need to be an expert, but they do need to listen to actual experts.   Which Kenney (and Scheer) clearly do not do and have no interest in doing.

Yep, both Kenney and Scheer seem to be able to ignore the research of 97%+ of professionally trained environmental scientists. Those would be the ones that didn't fail their courses.

Keystone pipeline has another 400,000 gallon spill this week (similar sized one a couple of years ago as well). Not that I support rail transit, but that is similar to over a dozen tanker cars spilling their entire contents.

I should also add, the Liberals are far from trustworthy on the climate file.  They have kicked the can down the road and failed to implement much of any plan....   even when they had a plan, they simply ignored it.

We will see about the carbon tax and if they will make it actually work.   They haven't shown $hit yet.

The climate file is really hard to manage. Since the PM isn't king of Canada, besides the environment he has to worry about and balance different factors like the economy, what Canadians want, how provinces will react, international obligations etc.

In terms of carbon taxes i think the provinces should be in charge of them based on what their voters want, just makes things easier instead of imposing something a province may or might not want or have a different idea.  ie: BC might want very aggressive carbon taxes while SK or AB want less or even none or want cap and trade. Provinces have a lot to do with climate change already given they're usually in charge of their own power grid.

Picking fights with provinces and trying to force them to do things they don't want isn't very democratic, if the provincial voters want action they can always vote for it.  It's also politically smarter for Trudeau.

We saw what the NDP did when they ran AB, they became much more friendly to oil and economic interests because they had to listen to their constituents and had an economy based on oil.

Clearly that's terrible for the environment and a shame.  What's the solution though?  We'll need oil to be shipped across the world until we have the tech and infrastructure in place to viably replace most oil use.  What is the safest, most enviro-friendly, and most efficient way to transport oil?  I doubt it's by tanker truck, whose engine pumps out its own GHG.

The industry has to use either pipeline, rail, or truck as far as I know. Plus sea-based transport.

I don't want any taxes, and it isn't very democratic that I am forced to pay. I vote for no taxes for myself, that is my action.

Agreed. I'm linking up with "Freeman on the Land" tout suite.

That makes no sense.  If the voters elect a government that had a "no taxes of any kind" policy, well that's fine and democratic, they just won't don't get roads and sewers and social services etc.  They want that stuff, so they elect provincial governments that collect taxes on them.

Why would you want to force provinces to do what they don't want to when there's a very easy option to let them decide what they want to do instead.  Do you or the feds know better than the people themselves?

Canada accounts for only 1.6% of the world's total GHG emissions.  Of that 1.6%, the oil sands make up 10% of Canada's total, meaning the oil sands make up only 0.16% of total global GHG emissions. https://www.nrcan.gc.ca/energy/publications/18731

Let's say by miracle Trudeau somehow soon cut oil sands production by a third, that would reduce global GHG emissions by only about 0.05%

Cancelling the pipelines won't have much effect on reducing GHG emissions since the AB oil will still get where it needs to go by truck or rail, it will just be less efficient & more costly and probably produce more CO2.

People overestimate how much effect Canada, a country of 36 million out of 7.5 billion, can have on reducing global GHG/AGW.  It's not nothing, but it's not a lot either.  Doesn't mean we should do nothing, it means it makes little sense if we strangle our economy to take bold action while the US and China doesn't follow suit.

I still haven't heard any idea or plan to ensure our petroleum resources are going to be there for future generations. Oil as a lubricant is essential for the operation of any machine, be it a motorcycle or a turbine. When we hve no lubrication, we have no civilization, no ability to feed people. Why are we in such a hurry to use it up?

Using it as a lubricant is a little different than burning it don't ya think?

By the end of this century we'll probably have technology so advanced we'll be able to replicate just about anything and/or produce any kind of synthetic oil needed.  The 3D printer is the first step towards Star Trek replicators.

We've been pouring synthetic oil in turbine engines for at least teh last ~40 years.
