after several weeks of laying low, Alberta Premier Kenney has once again charged forward with his favourite hobby-horse, 'A Fair Deal for Alberta'! Key to Kenney's misinformation & outright gaslighting is his attempt to leverage the results of the province's October 18th 'equalization referendum'... where Kenney has repeatedly claimed the result of the referendum gave him a "mandate" to pursue related negotiations with the federal government:

Quote
Boasting of a “very strong” mandate to take Alberta’s fight for a fair deal to Ottawa, Premier Jason Kenney declared that his province’s referendum question on equalization was answered by a clear majority who wish to see it removed from the Constitution. The actual wording of the question:
Quote
"Should Section 36(2) of the Constitution Act, 1982 — Parliament and the Government of Canada’s commitment to the principle of making equalization payments — be removed from the Constitution?"

notwithstanding the criticism of the referendum question wording, subsequent surveys have shown that the practical extension of removing equalization was not well understood by the Alberta populace... was not explained by the Alberta government. That is to say, to meet the requirement for constitutional negotiations — support from seven or more provinces making up at least 50 per cent of the population would be required. Most pointedly ~60% of those who voted chose 'YES' in support of the referendum question... however, given the low participation rate, less that ~25% of eligible voters actually voted 'YES'.
