Utes are cool but they are really only two seaters and don't cary a lot.

The VW Rabbit pickup and Dodge Rampage of the 80's were very similar to Utes but didn't take off in North America.

I wish we had ‘utes’ in Canada like they do in Australia.

I need a little more 'freeboard' for launching my dinghy into the chuck. I like the size of my Ford Ranger. It's also not as intimidating when I thinking about filling it up with firewood.  I had an old 1 ton 4x4 with dual tires and a dump for that back in the day.

Also need 4wd on slippery boat ramps at low tide.

I had to winch an old 2WD Suburban up a few boat ramps….  Ugh…. That was the pits.

Like it or not, pickup trucks are incredibly useful vehicles. The newer ones have the room and comfort for five of a nice sedan and can haul and tow most things a suburb dweller will ever need.

and the vast majority of urban living types driving pick-me-ups will never haul/tow anything - that's what urban-cowboy Jason Kenney is the poster-boy for!

You are wrong about that they don’t constantly get used as trucks but they do get used for a ton of things you can’t carry or tow with a regular car.
