How about Sikhs, that religion is also anti abortion. Should that disqualify Singh?
Scheer would not be our first Catholic PM, there have been several, mostly Liberals. Considering that churchís position on abortion and same sex marriage, should they have also been disqualified?

Scheer didn't answer a question, or answered it poorly but if he said he's not going to legislate these matters then who cares what his personal opinion is ?

no - it wasn't a 'one-off' time weak Andy failed to answer/answered 'poorly'. Notwithstanding Scheer left the door open for private-member bills related to restricting abortion/"conscience rights", why should weak Andy be believed... particularly in light of:

Anti-abortion group says 45 now-elected Conservative MPs would vote to restrict abortion access

Harper already did that and it failed in a free vote. It would do the same again.

Peter MacKay shows up in 2 tee-vee interviews this past week... and now Harper does a reach-around!

If a Sikh came out and waffled on abortion rights, then yes.  Turf their ass.   ::)

Because there's a double-standard around Christianity vs other religions, I believe.  Scheer didn't answer a question, or answered it poorly but if he said he's not going to legislate these matters then who cares what his personal opinion is ?

Right, but if the battle has been won should we never vote for a Christian again ?  And should we never vote for Muslims ?

Nonsense.  Neither of you read my first response to this.

So itís completely fair, given Scheerís record as a politician to try and legislate his religious views on others, to ask questions about it.

Please show me where Singh has ever tried to legislate, talked about legislating or espoused any sort of social conservative religious view.  The difference between the two is vast.  Stop ignoring what the politician has actually said and done in the House.  Scheer also gives speeches about how great social conservatism is to religious rightwing groups.  Totally fair to ask questions about this.

The "Campaign Life Coalition" claims they elected 46 anti-abortion MPs.  When rightwing religious groups brag about how many MPs they have in their pocket...  well...  people are going to ask questions.

Scheer could certainly have handled this better but I have noticed over the years that the only time a political leader's personal religious views become an election issue is when they are a conservative, everyone else gets a pass. They aren't even questioned, let alone challenged, immunity goes with the label.

If Scheer or any other leader wants to allow a private member bill, that's fine with me as long as it is a free vote. If you are concerned about free votes you should pay more attention to your candidates beliefs than their leader's.

The Supreme Court already ruled  the abortion provision of the Criminal code violated the Charter of Rights. Why do you think any other legislation wouldn't suffer the same fate.

Well, yeah...   no other MP from any other party has tried to legislate based on religious values.  The CPC are electing socially conservative MPs who have anti-abortion, anti-gay rights backers ($$$) helping them along.   Gee...  I wonder why it might be an issue with the CPC.

Not true.  There was a story where the CBC questioned each leader on where they stand on religious values during this election.  Also, May was questioned extensively on her Catholicism.

If the leader of any other party has tried to legislate based on religious values, I am guessing there would be questions.  They haven't.  I asked for examples of this from you and MH and you haven't provided anything.

A free vote for bills that, as you say below, aren't Constitutionally valid?  OK.  Sounds good to me.  I encourage as many CPC MPs as possible to bring forth such legislation.  Let's see what happens at the next election.

I would prefer MPs not to have regressive social values and to try and legislate based on those repugnant values.  But, the CPC should fill its boots and go whole hog on governing as a theocracy...   see how that works out for them.

Scheer gets beat up by Quebec CPC members.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/andrew-scheer-quebec-failed-candidates-1.5373743

Quote
During the campaign, Scheer said he would defend the rights of all Canadians ó but some noted LGBTQ Conservatives have since accused Scheer of being "stuck in the past" on issues that have long been settled.

Dagenais also said Scheer attached a "low importance" to Quebec and he could no longer sit as a member of his caucus as a result.

"We have wasted a unique opportunity and the result will be the same the next time, if the current leader and those who advise him remain in office, as is the case at this time," Dagenais said in a statement.

Andrew Scheer looks pretty clueless today for calling for back to work legislation for CN.

So would I and I'm not telling anyone who they should vote for, I think Scheer is a flop as well. Harper was in power for nine years and did none of that. During an election he promised a free vote if a private member bill was tabled. He was as good as his word. He said people should vote according to their conscience and he voted against the bill. It failed, case closed.

I don't know why anyone would bring up something that wouldn't be constitutionally valid either.

45 CPC MP's have said they would vote for abortion reform. Supposedly, 45 out of 121 CPC MPs and 45 out of 338 total. Hardly a threat.

Given the waldo's hyper-partisan nature, it's hard to imagine that he wouldn't be "piling on" any other leader the Conservatives chose just as much.  It comes across less as being reasoned criticism of Scheer, and more as being the waldo doing as the waldo do.  Hypothetically, is there any possible leader out there that the Conservatives might choose who wouldn't meet with the same derision from the waldo?

Oh well from what I'm hearing we may not have Scheer to kick around much longer. There seem to be a growing number of voices from within the party that want him gone, especially in PQ were they did so poorly in the election. One suggestion in an interview this am was he should at least resign and then run for leader again if he wants to stay in that position.
