Public Service Strike
« on: April 18, 2023, 09:54:21 pm »
Negotiations have broken down.  155,000 workers are walking off the job tomorrow.

They seemed to ask for raises within reason.

The union's last public wage proposal was 4.5 per cent for 2021, 2022 and 2023.
.

Although, negotiating 2 years behind is rather odd.

Negotiations between the federal government and PSAC's two groups each began in 2021. The union declared an impasse with each unit last year.

I assume the contract expired in 2020 or '21.

Would back-to-work legislation be a confidence motion?

I don't think so. It wouldn't be a money bill.

Nothing is a confidence vote unless the government says it is.

NDP says no legislation.  BLOC?  I think they said no too.  Cons would probably demand that back to work legislation be a 0% raise to support anything.

Looks like the government are going to have to actually negotiate a settlement.

yeah NDP are for unions, Bloc won't vote for back to work because a lot of Quebecois around Gatineau work for the feds, and the CPC want the strike to go on as long as possible so it makes the public as PO'd as possible to make the Liberals look bad.

Mulcair thinks this is a confidence issue and has the potential (small chance) of bringing the government down.
