Sure...  the stuff that really doesn’t matter or impact anyone outside of government.

I suppose so.  But also, some rights are read in by the judiciary right ?  I'm saying that I suspect that politicization of some such issues is a cynical branding exercise.

I was wondering about same-sex benefits for federal employees.  Of course you can argue that it doesn't affect people outside government and I would agree, but some would say that since it costs money every Canadian should have a say in it.  That's a microcosm of what I'm talking about.

Here's an archive piece I haven't watched but the excerpt seems apt:

Extending spousal benefits to gay and lesbian employees is just the right thing to do, says MP Svend Robinson. His fellow MP, Al Johnson, disagrees. And federal Justice Minister Kim Campbell is staying out of it.

I have no doubt that the PCs of the day were ducking the issue, but it's no braver to pick up on it and herald it AFTER there's majority support for it with Canadians.

I would rather we just grant the rights based on an all-party plan, and take this political football away.
