Fatal Attraction of President Trump
« on: October 04, 2021, 12:53:22 pm »
I'm not a fan of movies like Fatal Attraction, but the climax of the movie where the hero drowns her in the tub (spoiler alert) and relaxes, she rises back up to try and kill him. Last winter, there was a sense of relief in some quarters when Vice President Biden was sworn in as President. The Canadian Government briefly expressed a sigh of relief. It would be prudent to keep the lesson of Fatal Attraction in mind. If President Trump runs for President in 2024, there is a realistic chance he will win. President Biden won because he was not President Trump. By 2024, President Trump may win because he is Trump. President Biden has, so far, under performed and there has been no effort to address the issues that led 75 million voters to support Trump. In 2016, I could not imagine anyone voting for him. He was ill informed and inexperienced. I won't say nuts. Now, he is experienced and his support has not diminished. Unless the Democrats can turn things around, we could have a Trump second term and he never forgets a perceived insult. It would be wise for the Canadian Government to suck up to him occasionally. I hope I am wrong.

If he wins, he will do everything that he started to do in the final days: populate senior positions with yes-men cronies, make the other branches of government subservient to his wishes and undo the design of democracy in any way that suits him.

He would do damage to Canada, but less so than he would do to US democracy.

He lost the last election then Jan. 6 happened.  I don't think he has a great chance as long as the Democrats put forward a decent candidate.

All the democrats need is an America-first candidate somewhere near the center.  Unfortunately the Biden admin is much like the Trudeau admin, a bunch of corrupt virtue-signaling elitists.  I want to like the Biden admin but they make it hard.  Biden used the "build back better" slogan again a few weeks ago...like why are you feeding the other side?

The DNC seems to be splitting while the GOP is solidifying around President Trump. The most important issue to many of those 70 million Trump supporters is immigration. If President Biden could solve that, the Democrats could win in 2024. Good luck to them on that. A second term President Trump doesn't have to solve that problem, just promise to.

She is handicapped by those things no one will say publicly and over which she has no control, gender and race. She also came last in the 2020 primaries. The GOP has already branded her with nasty slander. I have no doubt she would make an okay President, but I don't think she will have the chance unless President Biden does not finish his term. I don't know that much about the person.
Pete Buttigieg would make an excellent President but he is handicapped by being openly gay. US politics has some way to go.
At this point in the cycle, the odds are the Democrat Presidential nominee will be someone we've never heard of. The front runners usually fall by the wayside.
My point is the Canadian Government should ensure they are prepared for President Trump winning in 2024 and guard against alienating him. If he wins, he will be looking for enemies and vengeance.

The DNC and GOP are both split between the populist extremes and the old guard.  Liz Cheney is defending the old guard her daddy was a part of, not much better if any in my opinion.

US needs populist centrists.  Every country needs populist centrists.  For some reason many voters like political royalty like the Clintons, Trudeau's, Bush's, Kennedy's etc.  These people don't know anything about the working class.

Handicapped?  Her gender and race is the primary reason she was selected as VP, not her competency.  She's not popular, I don't think she'd be a good pick.  I'm not sure who would be.

We need competent moderates who are ethical patriots and tough enough to keep the wolves at the door at bay.  These people are too smart for politics and go into the private sector and become successful.  You have to be slightly insane, terribly naive, or narcissistic to go into politics these days and put your family through the current media grinder.  In FDR's day they didn't even have television.

There is a major difference between being selected and elected. Susan Rice would have been a far better choice and better able to overcome the stated handicaps.

I don't think any political leader knows anything about the working class.

I've learned never to say never about Trump, but even Michael Cohen said Trump won't run again because he can't risk losing twice.  Cohen has been right about everything else he has said about trump, including what would unfold if he lost in 2020.

Having said that, if the Democrats are so weak in 2020 that he's got a solid chance, then yes, I can see it.  And I can see him winning because it took huge momentum to beat him in 2020, the democrats may not be as motivated in 2024.

I don't think anything we can do can help us though.  Trudeau was caught on camera making fun of Trump and Trump never forgets or forgives.

I wouldn't be surprised at all.

I guess we can ask the question at that time. For the moment there’s not much we can do with JT as PM.

There are reasons to think Trump might run: a sense he might win (whether real or just due to his ego), a plan to fleece more of his supporters in the form of campaign contributions, a way to keep out of jail (even if he's not elected, the government tends not to be too... aggressive... when delving into the legal issues of candidates, since they don't want to be seen as interfering in the election). And there are reasons to think Trump won't run: his ego can't take a loss, potential age/health issues.

The thing about Trump... he has a limited attention span.

Even if Trudeau did everything "right" (praised Trump at every opportunity, erected a statue to him on Parliament hill, renamed Toronto to Trump-to), it would be completely irrelevant, since Trump would forget all that the next time one of his advisors whispered in his ear "Tariffs". The, all the effort that Trudeau might have made to appeal to Trump would have gone out the window as Trump torpedoed Canada-U.S. trade relations.
