Because it was written as a response to the murders of 6 people praying in a mosque in Quebec.

As Omni pointed out, this isn't true, the motion was presented before the shooting.

But I believe that discrimination against Muslims would be better wording. Discrimination is well defined in Constitutional law - housing, jobs, etc.
I citing or promoting hatred against people because of their religion is another (criminal) issue.

Yes, protection against discrimination, including hate speech, is well defined in the law.  But I suppose MH is right in that the government can make clear it is wrong, in the climate we live in now.  I think their mistake was using the vague word "Islamophobia".  They should have just focused on discrimination and hate speech towards Muslims, which is more specific and illegal.

The motion is just measure by the government to show the public that they condemn what happened after the Mosque shooting in QC.  That's why it was specific about "Islamophobia".  It's a symbolic motion, it has no teeth.  IMO it would have just been fine for the PM and the Liberal party to make public speeches condemning what happened in the shooting.  The motion itself is just a PR thing.

The CPC voting against the motion is also meaningless, since their votes don't matter in a majority Liberal gov.  The whole thing is just noise.

Ah as I've already pointed out the motion was tabled PRIOR to the mosque shooting in PQ. The rise in hate crimes against Muslims had increased something like 250% over the preceding 3 years. And once again, the wording does include all religious discrimination.

I agree.
As worded, I think it is inflammatory rather than helpful. It has given fuel and airtime to white supremacists, as did JT's "open arms" comment about asylum seekers from the US.

I said: it's a new threat.  They are being targeted.  6 were shot dead in cold blood by a deranged killer who was addicted to alt-right sites, less than 2 years ago I think.

Eleven people were recently killed in a Pittsburgh Synagogue by a killer with alt right ties. I don't think being selective about your victims is a good idea. These people are a menace to more groups than just Muslims.

There are barely any posts or messages against Jews.  As was pointed out, the motion mentioned other groups but this is a new threat and a real one.  It's on the same scale as so-called Islamist terrorism

The problem with Faith Goldy is she is really attractive. However, after a steamy affair, I do not think I could tolerate her far right views. Maybe I could convert her.

Antisemitism is a lightning rod for the uneducated, and people angry with their lives.

Anti semiotic acts have been on the rise in western countries, including Canada.

Victoria is not the only place in BC where this has happened, as well as antiseptic graffiti.

Of course.  I'm not sure why you felt you had to point that out to me.

1. That's the best gaffe I've seen in awhile.  Seriously though, yes but Muslims are being targeted specifically as a way to undermine unity, I'm convinced.

2. You really need to disable autocorrect.

I had to point that out to you, since you are out of touch with many issues. No offense.

Not unlike Islamophobia, wouldn't you say?

It's remarkable how in many ways far-right hate violence is similar to Islamic terrorism:

- They're both terrorism of course.
- They are both on the very far-right.
- they both organize in groups, as well as "lone gunmen"
- they are both looking to restore their societies to a past state they see as more ideal, where they are both fighting against those who they see as foreign invaders of their societies who are corrupting their societies from the past ideal.
- they both seem to mostly come from disenfranchised young men who radicalize within fringe groups, often online
- They're both filled with antisemitism, and target Jews with violence
- they both target Muslims (alt-right target the most religious or fundamentalist Muslims, the Muslim terrorists target the least religious & more modern Muslims aka apostates)

But different too, in that Muslim terrorism isn't embedding itself into mainstream politics.
