When Scheer wins, will he abandon the wild racist element?  Will they abandon him?

I interpret Scheer's main concern... over this non-binding motion... was a perceived, "potential to infringe upon free-speech"! Ya, ya - Conservatives are such staunch advocates for protecting free-speech - especially allowing haters/nationalists/white-nationalists/white-supremists/etc., to ply their worst best! Strong leadership there weakSauce!

I find his criticisms of the motion fair.  The main problem is they don't define islamophobia, he says it's fair to condemn discrimination against muslims, but not fair to condemn or limit all criticisms of radical aspects of Islam.  He also says it only mentions Islam, yet we should be concerned about all religious discrimination/hate, like anti-seminitism.

Maybe take a look at what M-103 says in full. "Canada’s parliament has approved M-103, a non-biding motion that calls on the government to “condemn Islamophobia and all forms of systemic racism and religious discrimination,”

If you followed the Facebook pages of the alt right, you would see many posts scapegoating Muslims and singling them out.

It's a new thing so yes it needs special as attention.

I did.  Why does it single out Islamophobia multiple times, but doesn't single out other religions?

I don't even know what they're going to study.  How can a government prevent religious discrimination?  What does it have in its power to fight it? Maybe some advertisements to raise awareness?  That's about it.  Just more money wasted on useless studies.

The Liberals just came out with a government study concluding that Canada has a gender gap where women are less represented in politics.  Yeah everyone knows this.  What a waste of our tax dollars and time.  It's just virtue signalling BS that doesn't actually do much to solve the problems.

I've been kind of on the fence about this motion for the same reason as poonlight graham: I dislike all organized religion equally, and I believe criticism of a religion is legitimate free speech. But I don't believe discriminating against, or inciting or promoting hatred against people because of their religion (or lack of one)  is legitimate free speech.
The motion seems to include criticism of the religion of Islam. Consequently, it has caused problems rather than resolved them.
I think It could have been worded better to avoid some of the backlash.

Why is Islamophobia the only phobia to be singled out? Why is it somehow more objectionable than antisemitism?

Yes those things are terrible, but what is government going to do about this problem?  That's Facebook's problem to solve, not the government's.  There's still tons of racist/dumb people in our country, you can't legislate ignorant people to stop being ignorant.

The gov will spend a whole bunch of time to study the issue, come back with some report saying religious discrimination is problem in Canada (which everyone knows anyways) and then that's about it.  It's a waste of time & money.  There's already academics in Canada studying these issues and publishing journal articles, books etc.

The only thing to cure religious ignorance is exposure.  People literally need to meet and interact with Muslims to understand that most of them are regular people like you and I, and aren't crazy or violent etc.  People fear what they don't understand.

I said: it's a new threat.  They are being targeted.  6 were shot dead in cold blood by a deranged killer who was addicted to alt-right sites, less than 2 years ago I think.

Yes I guess they could have worded it to generically  include all religious discrimination, which it does, but I suspect the focus on Islamophobia has something to do with the significant increase of hate crimes targeted at Muslims over the last few years. Interesting (in a shocking way) that the motion was tabled just days before 6 Muslims were shot to death in a Quebec mosque.

The motion is just measure by the government to show the public that they condemn what happened after the Mosque shooting in QC.  That's why it was specific about "Islamophobia".  It's a symbolic motion, it has no teeth.  IMO it would have just been fine for the PM and the Liberal party to make public speeches condemning what happened in the shooting.  The motion itself is just a PR thing.

The CPC voting against the motion is also meaningless, since their votes don't matter in a majority Liberal gov.  The whole thing is just noise.

So if Canadians are going onto Facebook in record numbers to foment hostility against their fellow Canadians it's a "Facebook problem" ?

The government should at least make a statement for unity.  That's the minimum they could and did do.

Because it was written as a response to the murders of 6 people praying in a mosque in Quebec.
But I believe that discrimination against Muslims would be better wording. Discrimination is well defined in Constitutional law - housing, jobs, etc.
I citing or promoting hatred against people because of their religion is another (criminal) issue.
