Don Cherry
« on: November 12, 2019, 02:48:52 pm »
Anyone in this site want to defend him?

A majority on MLW seem to think his dismissal is part of Cancel Culture.

He said something controversial, many complained, he was given a chance to apologize, he declined, he was fired. Don't see why this is so controversial.

Do people even really care about what's on the First Intermission anymore?

Nope.

The Canucks are only on HNIC when they play in Toronto or Montreal so I don't watch it much anyway.
I watch them on Sportsnet all the time and don't miss having a Cherry spouting off.

That's exactly what happened.  He made his bed now he has to lay in it.

What really causes me to lose sympathy for Don Cherry: He recently went on Fox News to be interviewed by Tucker Carlson.

Carlson is a racist. Cherry going on a show hosted by a racist when trying to downplay your racism seems quite counterproductive. He should have been a bit more selective regarding where he made media appearances.

Probably only the likes of Carlson/faux news would entertain Cherry in the wake of his firing and the reasons for it. Roger Ailes himself once said that Fox is entertainment, not news.

It's all-out warfare out there by most media companies to control the narrative, to spin the news that is reported, and to choose what to report and what not to report.  FOX News is one of the most obvious and aggressive on the right, same with The Rebel and Brietbart etc.  But most outlets do it to some extent or another.  The Toronto Star and MSNBC etc does it on the left.

I think when you own and operate a media company and you have that much power over information, the temptation to bend the narrative towards your own political agenda is strong. Sometimes it's done unconsciously too. There isn't much reward for trying to stay objective or observe journalistic integrity.

The reward for staying objective, or at least striving to do so is not garnering such a laughable/fake news reputation as have done such outlets as Fox and Breitbart.

There is an obvious reason why Fox news is Donald Trumps favorite go to when he wants to air his latest load of BS without worrying about being seriously questioned on it.

Not necessarily.

I heard him on the radio yesterday on my drive home (and I believe the station I listed to is affiliated somehow with CTV). So there are more mainstream media outlets who are willing to listen to him to get his side of the story.

And even if few mainstream organizations will talk to him, the better solution is to stay silent, rather than to appear on a racist television show.

Cherry is saying he should have said "everybody" instead of “you people”. The problem is he explicitly singled out immigrants with far more than the “you people”. He said: “You people that come here… whatever it is, you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey, at least you could pay a couple of bucks for a poppy”

"you" and "our' are the words that jumped out at me.

I am guessing that the people at the MLW who are mad about Cherry getting fired are probably the same people who say "Meryl Streep should stick to acting!" whenever some celebrity says something they disagree with.  "Stay in your lane!" is something that applies to people they disagree with, but not people they agree with.

The difference, of course, between Don Cherry vs Meryl Streep (or whichever celebrity got the conservatives riled up this week) is that while celebrities get paid to act and spout out about other stuff in their free time, Don Cherry was on TV as an employee of a broadcaster who was on the job when he made the remarks he got fired over.

Don Cherry can say whatever the **** he wants in his spare time, but when he was on TV using the platform provided to him by his employer, he was a representative of his employer and he caused them harm.
