Covid Shaming - Is This the Canada I Thought I Knew and Loved?
« on: February 22, 2021, 07:44:37 pm »
I can't believe this is happening in 21st Century Canada, Positive Coronavirus Test? Canadians Worry Their Neighbors Will Find Out. This is the equivalent of 18th Century tarring and feathering, or 19th Century riding a person out of town on a rail. Why? Excerpts:

Quote from: New York Times
Cortland Cronk moved to Victoria, British Columbia, after being publicly shamed in his home province of New Brunswick...Others have argued Mr. Cronk is a victim  of a worsening civic problem in the country — public shaming of people  testing positive — that is not just unfair but ineffective and that  makes the coronavirus harder to quash.

Canadians might be known internationally as nice, apologetic and fair-minded. But, a year after the pandemic arrived, some Canadians worry it has exposed a very different national persona: judgmental, suspicious and vengeful. Covid-shaming has become fervent in parts of the country, with locals calling for the heads of not just politicians and doctors breaking the rules but their own family members and neighbors.

Is this real? Is this the Canada I thought I knew, albeit as an American from a distance? Gordon Sinclair had similar questions about the U.S.'s adventures in self-destruction in 1973 ,Gordon Sinclair, The Americans, originally written and delivered via radio broadcast  5 June 1973 on station CFRB, Toronto, Canada (link).

It's pretty bizarre but it's also the first time I've heard of such a thing. Maybe its an Atlantic Canada thing.

What makes you think this is a 'Canada problem'?

It's not nice, it's not neighbourly, but I blame the covidiots for this type of vigilantism.  If there weren't such large cohorts of idiots fighting for their 'right' to not wear masks and gather in large groups, I think overall we'd be a lot more sympathetic as a society.

If it means anything though, when there was an exposure at my kid's school, the overwhelming support was concern for the family.

So I live here in Fredericton and the problem with this guy is that while he was awaiting his test results he travelled out of city, an hour and a half away to my city, shopped at a small local tailor shop (which needed to close for 48 hours to disinfect, btw), and then went out for dinner at a locally-owned restaurant. I don't care if you're told you don't "need" to isolate. If you're awaiting test results, don't be a careless halfwit. He also lied to the tailor about his positive test result after finding out.

So no. He's not shamed for having COVID. He was shamed for being an imbecile and risking the lives of all of those he came into contact with, then lying about it.
