Chinese Popo in Canada (and elsewhere)
« on: October 02, 2022, 02:49:27 pm »
I thought this deserved its own topic.

WTF

Canada is China's chew toy.

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/article-why-are-chinese-police-operating-in-canada-while-our-own-government/

Apparently, China has set up many of these “police stations” in several foreign countries.

The original story is from the New York Post, a paper with a history of sensationalism and writing right-wing BS.
https://nypost.com/2022/09/30/china-has-opened-police-stations-in-us-and-canada-to-monitor-chinese-citizens-report/

The story is based on a report from a small human rights organization called Safeguard Defenders

The only other references that I could see were other right-wing media outlets picking it up.

Why is that?  I think it is likely because there’s not much meat behind the story…. it comes from a dubious source with zero specifics as to what these alleged police stations are doing.

Could it be true?  Of course!  China isn’t a fair or reasonable actor.

Should you believe it?  Probably not yet, in my opinion.

I would tend to agree if it wasn't the G&M reporting it as well. It will make good election fodder and the government better have some believable answers.

Accurate or not, waldo doesn't seem to have a problem with the idea.

I guess low-information memers will assume that these "police stations" would havevsome kind of jurisdiction in Canada?
Not really sure what they think.

The G&M didn’t report anything.  It was an opinion piece that had zero details.
