Apparently you didn't get the jist of what I said. It's about showing support for any political party on the bench where that is not allowed. Yes I would have kicked his ass off the bench no matter who's hat, t shirt etc. he was showing.

If that's true then I'm wrong and I apologize.

It's quite important that we have faith in our judicial system. A sitting judge showing that lack of judgement erodes that faith. How do we know that even if this guy leaves his hat at home he won't bring political bias with him?

Almost every single judge known to humankind brings political bias with them into court.  Every person has their own moral philosophy which informs how they view the world & what is just & unjust.  That's why some judges on the Supreme Court are left-leaning, some right-leaning, like in the US courts too.  It's a factor in how they interpret the law & the deed.

Demonstrating his bias in such a flagrant way was not appropriate, hence his penalty.

This judge gets 30 day suspension without pay for wearing this stupid hat as he presided over court cases. Were it up to me I'd kick his ass off the bench forever. I notice on "the other place" the usual right wingers were giggling and complaining as only they can do. Apparently there is not a lot of legal knowledge among that crowd as they think it's OK for the judicial system to be swayed by politics. Very sad.

Why?

Aren't there more serious offenses for a judge than doing what amounts to telling a bad joke?

I'm afraid it's a little more than "telling a bad joke". Politics, especially the f'ed up type of Trump's politics are not supposed to be advertised in a courtroom, and especially by a judge.

The panel that evaluated his actions penalized him one notch below unseating him totally because he had shown no previous example of this behavior.

There is a place and time for jokes - that isn't one of them.

I spend a lot of time in courtrooms. Judges often tell jokes. The litigants are expected to laugh.

Exactly. Imagine if you were, say, a Muslim pursuing a case in the courts, and you have a judge sitting on the bench advertising his support for a complete racist who wants to expel all Muslim's from his country!

That judge is lucky I wasn't on the that panel.

The is a difference between telling a joke and advertising for a politician.  Would you trust a judge wearing an "I love Trudeau" T-shirt?

I wonder why he claims to spend so much time in courtrooms? If it was as a lawyer, which I gather he is trying to suggest, you'd think he'd know better than to dismiss this issue as a "joke".

If you have to come face to face with such a judge I hope you'll chill the **** out. YOU may, but you shouldn't.

Every judge (and every other human) has their own biases. The challenge for judges is to make rulings based on the laws and unbiased by their personal prejudices. The investigation concluded that there's no evidence that this judge made rulings based on his bias rather than on the law.

Well, she's blonde. If she's sufficiently cute she should HOPE to come face to face with such a judge, since he'd probably just pat her on the head and send her on her way.

I get enough extra pats when I go through airport security, but that's a topic for another thread.

Judges and lawyers are REALLY particular about the perception of evenhandedness and fairness. He didn't make biased decisions and that's why the punishment wasn't more severe.

If the judge were wearing that T-shirt in an American courtroom I would think it was inappropriate for being a bit too informal. And Trump never ran for Canadian office. Unless you suggest, which I doubt, that Canada is an adjunct to the U.S.

Lets refrain from questioning the occupational competency of others- it doesn't really serve discussion.
