Soooo about that 'increase' in defense spending.... so much for that, right? I'm fairly sure, in fact, that were it not for Trump there'd have been a big decrease in spending. Just as I'm sure their review will call for a smaller, cheaper military.

There's been no decrease, and a very small increase in operational spending - but anything else is supposed to wait for the review - we'll see.

Meanwhile, on a somewhat related note, the CCG is possibly going to get some AOPS ships of its own:

They didn't postpone all capital spending 'until after the review'. They postponed it until the mid 2030s.

Would you care to speculate on why they would expect that it would take another five years before they can start building frigates when they basically bought the plans already? It's not like they're designing them rom scratch, and frankly, if they were designing them from scratch I'd still expect them to finish faster than five years.

That spending was allocated to specific projects.  It works out to less than $1B over the next 6 years.  These are mostly projects that were to take place in the 2020s, and now now.  This isn't the first reallocation, and this isn't the first government to do it.

Do you recall me saying a lot of flattering things about the Tories and their defense policies?
There should, at a rock solid basic minimum, be enough armored vehicles to transport our troops around. They shouldn't need to rob other battalions and regiments whenever someone goes overseas. They should have enough trucks they don't have to rent buses. They should not be using Korean war vintage artillery, for Gods sakes.

Vehicles that sit are useless, as they go to hell right away.  We have new artillery.  The old ones are just for practice and avalanche duties.

You can't train with buses.

So no sign of this increase in defense spending to date. As to the ships, well, none is under construction at the momen, and the government refuses to say when construction might start, even on the supply ships or icebreakers. And it now says the delivery dates are 'secret'. I think this is because they're going to put off spending any money as long as possible. The government has yet to even agree on a design for the new frigates, and has now pushed back the date to decide that until at least next year.

Trudeau's much vaunted support for the navy is turning to be pretty much as real as his support for proportional representation.

I think it is sad that this thread has been open for almost a year and still there is no positive news from DND, they sit and wait for table scraps from the nation that it serves, proudly i might add, and we as it's citizens treat them like a relative that has been living in our basement for far to long, we love them during some holidays, and hate them when it comes time to buy groceries.....I had great hopes for the liberal party, they talked a great game, and then the time lines were extended beyond a reasonable time frame....

I think if Canadians really knew what condition our military is in, they would be disgusted, feel cheated because for so long we have been lead to believe everything is ok...when it is not....but deep down we have known this for some time, even made it part of our culture, making fun of our military capabilities or the lack off....to the point we actually found it funny, Ya not so funny now....

Canada’s spending on the military is about right, except previous governments haven’t spent on new infrastructure and equipment.

Unfortunately, infrastructure spending is going to have to increase for the next decade or so, but hopefully it can be reduced again after the capital costs of all the equipment that needs replacing has been spent.  Canada doesn’t need the most expensive/latest technology.

Canada also doesn’t need a large military.  1% of GDP to maintain what we have should be fine.

Some of your post seems like self pity and comes across as a bit whiny....   Canada loves its military and is proud of its history...  that doesn’t mean a blank cheque.

Canada has 2 massive oceans protecting us from most countries, plus our biggest ally the world's mighty superpower below us to help defend us.  We don't need a big military to defend our borders.  We do need a military of course, and it's a big country & waters to defend, as well as arctic sovereignty to worry about.  But really, we don't need to be going overseas very much at all, so let's take that money and built up our defenses here and a modest team to react to international security threats if need be.

Agreed. So let's take the F 35 off the shopping list. We don't need a "stealth" fighter.

So you are saying we should withdraw from all defence alliances including NATO and NORAD?
