CPC "Health Critic", BuffaloGal Rempel, seems a tad perplexed with Cullen's questioning of content within the Sloan sponsored petition!

2 months isn't "longterm". Testing has always taken years for new vaccines. The fastest a new vaccine has ever been produced is 4 years for the mumps. There's also never been a coronavirus vaccine (SARS, MERS etc) because there's been major safety concerns. I'm not saying it won't be safe, i'm saying testing obviously hasn't been as rigorous with this vaccine, but risks are very low , longterm side-effects for vaccines are very rare. Ideally they would take more time to test but the risks of producing these vaccines now are far less than not producing them and letting people continue to die from COVID.

Two months, from what I’ve been reading, is the normal post vaccination study for side effects before approval. What you’re talking about are long term effects. There are many medications on the market today that may have long term effects that we won’t know until years after approval. That’s normal. It’s happened before. It doesn’t mean that corners have been cut in this case. Never has the world diverted so many resources into getting this done. Never have regulators allowed companies to put forward data on a rolling basis. Health Canada has has been examining safety and efficacy data of the Pfizer candidate vaccine since October, 7 days a week, and in some cases, 24 hours a day. Normally, this data would be submitted after the two months, in one large lump, and then just left to be analyzed over months - years.

This process is so fast because of two reasons: the inefficiencies have been removed from the system, and the normal funding obstacles and hurdles just don’t exist. As a result of all of this, a lot of other research programs will suffer.

What am I saying? It’s not that there’s less risk from the vaccine than the virus, it’s that there’s virtually none.

It is true that there was never a SARS or MERS vaccine approved for use.

There was probably never a vaccine for SARS because it was contained before it could get out of hand, so developing a vaccine now would be a questionable use of resources. And while they have never approved of a MERS vaccine, there has certainly been development work on it (e.g. actual clinical trials), and if it had been as problematic as Covid19 I am sure more resources would have been dedicated to finishing it.
