Yet another mass shooting in Florida
« on: August 26, 2018, 02:29:00 pm »
This time at a video game tournament in Jacksonville. One eyewitness claims that one of the shooters got angry because he lost his round in the contest. Maybe he just couldn't tell the difference between his game gun and the real one he probably bought from a gun store yesterday. "When will they ever learn"

I've seen two people shot (outside of time in war zones) and both were in Florida. One erupted from a drunken dispute in a bar over jealousy regarding a woman. After I dusted myself off I decided to just see how easy it would be to buy a gun as a foreign visitor to the state. Show a valid picture ID, such as a DL, choose your weapon, plunk your payment down, happy hunting. Maybe that's just a little too easy!

It was a "Madden NFL" video game tournament. It's a football game, not a shooting game.

That aside, I'm not surprised there would be a shooting at a video game tournament. Not because "video games make people violent", but because  "gamer culture" includes some of the most bitter and entitled social rejects on the internet.

Sounds like this so called "gamer culture" got this guy violent...also dead. Maybe that's why I've always found it so repulsive.

That's just dumb.  That's like observing that a lot of athletes are jerks and concluding that sports must have made people into jerks.

I would simply refer you back to your own previous post. I'm certainly not the expert you seem to be on gaming culture, but now you seem to be coming to their rescue-speaking about dumb.

It's the causal/cofactor question: are lawyers **** because law turns you into an **** or because **** become lawyers ?

Next, objectivity: or are lawyers not **** but you just think that ?

These unanswerable questions just sit there and accumulate forum posts...

Video games are very mainstream, and only a small fraction of people who play video games would identify themselves as "gamers" and go to gaming tournaments to prove their expertise, just only a tiny fraction of people who play cards once in a while would identify themselves as "gamblers" and go to poker tournaments to prove their expertise.  "Gaming culture" is a small subset of those who play video games.

And it attracts a toxic element... often people with no real-world accomplishments who have linked their self-esteem with their success at gaming. Not all of them, of course, but there is an element there who do.  And it's an environment of elitism, gate-keeping, and misogyny.  They disdain those who are not "real gamers" who try to participate in the field, especially girls... the idea that gaming is for everybody is contrary to their self-image as elite experts in a specialized field.   And so gaming culture has become a magnet for toxic personalities and misogynists.  It's a world where their arrogance and misogyny are respected.

These guys have a self-image of themselves as modern-day gladiators or gun-slingers.  And getting "pwned" at a tournament and losing face in front of the rest of the community would be a blow to their self-esteem.
